This past year with the new level changes, gymnasts were able to skip Level 6. We have heard varying things on whether they can do that this year. Does anyone know...can girls go right from Level 5 to Level 7, or do they have to score out of 6?

Yes, some gyms choose to go straight from L5 to L7. There are a couple of different philosophies about which is the best way to go. I decide on an individual basis. Hope that helps. :)

According to the USAG rules there is no score out for Level 6. You can go from 5 to 7. I have seen a girl at our gym go from L4 to L7 (she scored out of L5) and then went to 7.

L6 is not a required level. It is SUPPOSED TO BE for level 5 gymnasts who are not ready for 7. We avoid it.

We were at a meet this weekend and some judges had said they heard it changed this year and they now have to score out of level 6....I was also told that by a national level coach this past spring. Just trying to verify if it had changed.

I was just reading the rules on the usag website. You do not have to compete level 6 as long as you have a 31 aa in level 5. I'm in region 5.

Modility score of 31AA at a USA-G Sanctioned meet at Level 5 is required by USA-G. Clubs can adopt stricter requirements. (We ask for a higher level of performance as it is our belief that "mastery" of the core skills is needed for future success in our State/Region.)

Different philosophy for our USA-G gymnastics team.

L6 is not required. It is for athletes not ready for L7. We do not avoid it. Yes athletes who are not ready for L7 compete L6. Our L6 athletes are learning upgrade skills on all events, artistry requirements needed for optional gymnastics, learning to perform optional routines and improving workout ethos and commitment to USA-G gymnastics. Our gymnasts train to compete and they do not pause mastering competition while they are mastering upgrade skills.

In our program, the athletes who have UB - Clear-hip exit > 45', Giants, Layout flyaway, VT - blocking HS vault, BB -flight, linked dismount, flight, series (BWO/BWO) and FX - Layout, FHS-Salto, 1 1/2 turn, switch, & split leap compete L7. Additionally athletes must show artistry in the event routines that is expected in our State.

L6, IMO, is a well constructed answer to athletes still working to master L7 skills.

Best, SBG -
