Yes, that's why I said what I said at the end of my reply: "...you know your gymnast the best. I said all of the above stuff, but at the end of the day, as a mom, if I see her just so unhappy and crumbling, I might cave."
And the "my thing has always been to see through a commitment" was in...
Some of it's been said (diving, pole vault, climbing), but I've also heard of past gymnasts (some personally) excelling in...
- rowing
- dance (any style)
- snowboarding
- karate (or other martial arts)
- surfing
- olympic weightlifting
It's also interesting someone said golf! None of the...
Doing both USAG and AAU does sound like a lot...
My thing has always been to see through a commitment. Yes, even if they really want to stop immediately. For me, this is bigger than gymnastics. It's a life lesson... that we don't just bail out and quit. We see through the season, an...
We thought we had a PT we could work with that understands gymnastics (recommended by some coaches and gymnasts)... turns out they are way out of our budget, unfortunately, and doesn't take insurance. We found one more, but they are a couple hours away and also doesn't take insurance. *sigh*
We...
Thank you for checking in. I'm doing better now, although still pretty anxious. I think these past few days, the most upsetting thing is how so many people keep trying to downplay the severity of what we are going through, but I'll take that over what we went through and how I felt last week...
Yes, we will definitely not rush things. Our doctor said once she's in a hinged brace, she can go back to doing very very simple, modified leg work only. I'm talking calf raises and butterfly leg/hip stretches. Absolutely no upper body stuff and no touching apparatuses. Her coaches are 100% on...
UPDATE 3/16/23
Yesterday, she went in for surgery. Official procedure name: Humerus Medial Epicondyle Open Reduction Internal Fixation (ORIF).
The fractured chipped medial epicondyle, which was displaced far from her humerus, broke into 2 during the procedure, which made the surgery itself...
I think you are right about some kids not understanding time and severity, at least for my child! I don't know how she's such a "cup half full" kind of person. And here I am, an emotional wreck (not in front of her)... I'm having trouble eating and have only forced a few bites since Tuesday...
@cmg - I received a reply from the doctor and she let me know step by step what her plan is for her ligamentous and other soft tissue. She's not dismissing it at all, which gave me a lot of reassurance. I will keep advocating for the best care for sure and keep asking questions.
I am going through that emotional rollercoaster today for sure. I've been a mess all day. We have a PT lined up that works with gymnasts and also is familiar with our surgeon. If for some reason we aren't able to go to that PT, we will for sure find someone who understands high level gymnastics...
Yes, I will definitely keep asking about soft tissue damages. When she told me she's not ordering an MRI right away, I made a note in my notebook to follow up about it on the day of the surgery and during follow up appointments. I also wrote an email really early this morning to her so that I...
UPDATE 3/9/23
We drove far and saw the specialist today. She's an arm specialist and is someone that understands high performing child athletes and their needs (we went to a children's hospital). She is scheduled for surgery next Wednesday. The doctor told us that for any "regular" child...
Is the IG of a level 7 gymnast that's asian and occasionally posts her golf swings? :p If it is, then it's probably my daughter :) She wants to share and put her recovery process in her IG stories.
She's always been super positive and is an optimist. I have yet to hear her say "why me?", but I...
