Parents Low to high score progression

A kid who skills come easy to but might struggle with polish or perhaps flexibility can definitely blossom when they can choose leaps/dance that suits them. Especially if polish and focus improves with age. A kid who is scoring below 9’s because they struggle with the skills is unlikely to...

    Pointed toes in bridge

When kids lift their heels it can often indicate a lack of flexibility. If this is the case practise reaching back towards an arch position from knees making sure the hips are tucked under (open) and shoulders are open. Also walking hands backwards down the wall into bridge with heels flat might...

    WAG Running, weights, and age

For Roundoff entry vaults gymnasts rarely run at 100% anyway so it isn’t really an issue. Tsuk and Handspring entry vaults it is more relevant.

    Off Topic COVID gym changes

When kids have to buy their own chalk I think they waste a lot less, as their parents realise pretty quickly how expensive it is.

    Parents The average gymnast debate

At Level 3-6 routines are judged out of 10 so not halving the deductions could lead to some very low scores. Level 7+ have D and E scores as per FIG (obviously with different requirements) so most scores are over 10, so this isn’t really an issue.

    Parents Beam requirements

Not in the US but I would say the series needs 2 elements on the beam. I have never come across a level where an Acro skill into the actual dismount skill counts for the series.

    Parents Tight upper back/bhs

Tight hip flexors might also be a contributing factor.

Parents How important is the state meet?

Agree with moving now especially if she is not fussed and it is going to save you that much money. Imagine if you stayed and she got sick or sprained an ankle the week of the event and had to miss it anyway.

    WAG Avoiding Burn Out

Definitely agree that in Australia 5 days a week at Level 4/5 is excessive. Our 4’s are a similar age and do 3x3 hrs a week. Our 5’s do 4 x 3.5 hours and 5 days a week isn’t an option until Level 8 and we regularly have girls medalling at Nationals. The only reason I could see to do 5 days a...

    Coaches Intermediate coach

If she has completed all the sections and is paid the award wage, then yes she should move to a higher pay rate. If she is paid above the award wage then it might depend on her employer.

    WAG Wide arms on bars

If you have proportionally long arms compared to your body you may be putting your arms wider to be able to keep your arms straight in casts (so you can get your hips on the bar and create a deep pike at the end of the kip, start of the cast. It may be an issue when pirouetting in handstand.

Parents Help with Sylvia P Sizing, Please!

They can be odd, we had a short stocky 16 year old who normally wears an AXS, order that size for her State Rep Leo, it was unwearable, way too big, with arms that were ridiculously long. She ended up wearing a lean 11 year club mate’s size 10 as they competed on different days and were in...

    WAG Squat on

We have had some issues with a girl who has tight calvex. She has short arms and also her hamstrings are a little tight. She struggles with a pike on because of this and the squat on because of ankle flexibility. She can get one foot on facing the front but tends to turn the other one out to get...

    WAG Switching legs

I would assume that you do your forward walkover and round off on opposite legs. Also likely your handstand and cartwheel on opposite legs. At this point, (I’m assuming you are a teenager) you are unlikely to want to change legs on either of these skills so will need to continue doing it like...
