Parents Xcel preteam? What should we expect?

We have been at 2 gyms to this point and from everything I’ve seen xcel bronze is comparable to level 1-2 of compulsory levels. Silver is comparable to level 3. Xcel gold is comparable to levels 4-5. Xcel gymnasts tend to be older. They have the option to opt in to competitions and aren’t...

    Parents Move or Stay

In our area the YMCA’s don’t have a program like this nor do the high schools but it sounds like it’s not quality training or coaching. I would look at a private gym and do a free trial week where they can evaluate her and see what level or program fits best.

Anon Should we stay…or should we go?

I would first communicate concerns expressed here to the gym, ask that she be moved to 3 and if they push back I would switch gyms. My daughter scored high 8’s in level 2 at 5 yrs old and moved on to 3 and scored all low to mid 9’s. Level 2 and 3 are not even necessary as you can enter the...

Parents When / How long is your season?

For our lower levels 2-5, the season starts in October and ends with State at the end of March. They have 7-8 meets before State. For our optionals levels 6-10, they compete in the spring with an average of 4-5 meets prior to state, regionals or westerns. If the optionals compete in the fall...

    Parents Qualifying for States

My only worry beyond this is that they will also want her to repeat level 3 since they don’t consider her good enough to go to the State Meet. I would find that out now because that will be a real bummer watching her team move on. My daughter repeated level 3 due to not having her kip at the...

Parents Try out for 6 year old

My daughter just turned 7 and is on level 4. Her first try out was at 4 years old for pre-team. I told her exactly what to expect and to do her best. If she had thought it was an extra or just a fun practice, she wouldn’t have performed as well and would have been lazy with the skills. I...

    Parents Level 4, 20 hours a week

We were at a gym like that for 2 years and it was crazy! The 5-6yr olds in Level 2 practiced 12-16 hours per week. Level 3 was 16-20hrs and level 4 and up were all 24hrs a week and more with privates. Our new gym has level 2 practicing 3-6hrs, level 3 is around 9hrs, level 4 is around 12hrs a...

    Parents Hardest Skill To Acquire

I will say the kip is the hardest so far for my level 3 daughter. She will likely be held back in level 3 next season because they say if she doesn’t have it by team tryouts next month she can’t advance although she has all the other level 4 skills. She has been so close for months but still...

Parents Is It Time To Move On? (Tell Us Your Story)

That’s crazy for the coach to say that because I see girls competing in levels 2-3 at the age of 11-13. I feel like that’s a little old to start if you are wanting to compete in college or elite but most kids burn out these days by level 5 anyhow. I say let them enjoy it while they can...

Parents Tearing up during practice and favoritism

Any chance you can schedule a meeting with the owner to discuss the issues with the coach? Is that the only coach there? I feel like making a rash decision to quit because of this coach will make her resentful and she might have regrets leaving the sport later. I was devastated as a kid when...

    Parents Instagram Highlights and Skills

Our gym is very active on IG too but 90% of the time it’s spent only promoting baby gym and rec classes for ages 3-7. We have so many amazing team kids and many who go on to get scholarships. Honestly I’ve thought to myself that if I were an outsider looking in I would have no idea this gym...

Parents Attending travel meets when injured?

I would not be going. Use the money for a cool family trip instead!

Parents Pros and cons of lower levels

In our area, competitions start at level 2 with the average age of 5-6yrs old. I’ve never seen level 1 competed even when going up travel meets.

Parents Is the travel meet worth it?

We live in Las Vegas and our gym travels to Florida for the Magical Classical (Disney Themed Meet) every other year. We went last year for Level 2 along with half the team and it was great for the kids and families to bond outside the gym. We went to the beach after the meet and most of us...

Parents How to find a new gym

I can’t give the best advice regarding switching gyms as I haven’t done that yet but I can tell you that my daughter was moved from rec to pre team at 4. Competed level 2 at age 5 and level 3 at 6yrs old. She barely made the cut off with having a summer birthday. Another gym in our area won’t...
