Coaches Kicking team athletes off the island

Seems to be talk to the athlete, if that doesn't help talk to the parents and and if that doesn't help then out of the club all together. Not sure if they have ever gotten that far. The thing is challenging behaviour is usually caused by something. The athlete might not want to be there, there...

Anon Would you leave a gym?

That is annoying, but not sure if it is more than that and definitely not sure if it would make me want to switch clubs. I guess it depends a bit on whether the club is a good one with a safe environment and whether any decent alternatives were available. If my child was in a good place, I would...

    Parents Um, is anyone else...

No tape for my my 9-yo, but she did get sent to school with a large cut across her forehead and nose after she walked face first into one of the wires of the bars

WAG Where to buy leotards and accessories?

Gymgear in Canada make really soft leotards. Definitely the softest that my daughter has. For the most part she just has cheap ones from Aliexpress, some of which are nice and soft. Most are just standard material and pretty decent for the price. Some are absolutely rubbish though, so worth...

Parents What is your threshold for driving vs. flying to a meet?

We live on an island, so anything outside the island automatically needs flights as the the boat is expensive and slow. If we stay on our island it can be up to a 7 hour drive to the furthest places. Most are within 2 hours though.

Parents Does your gymnast care what event they start on at a meet?

My gymnast doesn't mind starting anywhere. Even if she has an event that doesn't go well at the start, she seems to be able to move on. Personally I prefer it if she starts on beam, that gets my nerves out of the way :)

    ChalkBucket New Site Theme!

Love the clean look, but not a fan of the font at all. Is that something that I can change in my browser settings?

Parents When / How long is your season?

Different country, our season is May to November, with roughly one competition per month. You only need two qualifying scores, so once you have those you can skip competitions if you want (we don't pay up front, so easily done). My daughter likes competing, so I haven't been able to convince her...

    Parents Mock meets

We have a mock meet for our Step 1 gymnasts that have never competed before. It is mostly to give them an idea of what to expect. There are no mock meets for any other level

Parents how do we stand out hosting first meet?

Most, if not all, of the above. What my gymnast remembers is the temperature in the gym, especially if it is too hot (rare) or too cold (common). Being on time is the most important to me. Enough seating with a good view of all apparatus is another one. We have been to quite a few where you had...

    Off Topic Halloween

Our gym stayed open, but halloween is not much of a thing in New Zealand anyway. I didn't see any noticeable reduction in numberss. The gym closes for public holidays and summer holidays only

Parents Advice to newer gym parents on... medals!

I am doing this. Well, I am no longer using a sharpie. My daughter still likes to wear hers from time to time and we found sharpie will rub off after a while. Stickers sound like a good idea, though. Ribbons and certificates go in a scrapbook album. I don't do the decorating thing, just glue the...

Parents Daughter says she is horrible and wants to quit after the year is up

Could it be that while she loves gymnastics, that she doesn't like the competitive aspects? Some people love competitions, some just don't. Being constantly judged is very hard and if it doesn't go like she had imagined/hoped/wanted, then I can see how that could become a problem. If that is the...

    Coaches Start-up Gymnastics facility

Different country so our fees don't mean much (a lot less than USA prices), but of the five clubs near us only two have built their own building, the rest are in industrial units of some sort. The clubs that built their own building are older clubs (30+ years), so have had lots of time to get...

    Parents Best Advice

Mine would be to never compare one gymnast to another. Each is on their own journey and will achieve things at their own pace. Sometimes your child will be the first the get a certain skill, sometimes they are the last and that is okay.
