    Coaches Pirouettes and Post Arm

That makes sense. I've been teaching blinds the same way. So they blind change on their dominant arm, then pirouette on non-dominant. Should probably start working them on both though! Thanks!

    Coaches Pirouettes and Post Arm

I know this question has been asked before but never really got a good answer. What do you all teach as far as which arm to use in pirouettes? I've been told before that you post on your non-dominant arm, and some people say to teach both arms. But when it comes down to competing, is it dominant...

Coaches Teaching flyaways without a pit

See we've been doing that in the past (we kinda have to), but we've started having an issue with kids initiating the tuck/flip while still holding onto the bar. I thought this was because they learned to flyaway with bent knees on the low bar, but I suppose it is more likely that they are just...

Coaches Teaching flyaways without a pit

We do have rings, and I have never thought of using them to teach UB flyways! I guess I could probably use the p-bars too! Thanks, I'll give that a try!

Coaches Teaching flyaways without a pit

Yep! That's the "dead cow" drill I've been doing. They really like that one. No spotting belt yet, but it is in the works. Yes, the ones that are learning flyaways already have back tucks on floor/tramp/etc. I think they're worried they're going to kick the bar, which ironically is making...

Coaches Teaching flyaways without a pit

Hey everyone! I've begun teaching tucked flyaways to our prospective level 5s but am running into a little problem. We've been doing "dead cow" drills and they've been going okay, but when it's time to start flipping them it's obvious they get scared and are pulling in on the bar. I've tried...

    Coaches Favorite drills 2017 (video)

Great stuff! I really like the free hip one, I've used it a few times with great success! With the cast/swing handstand one, are you ever worried about them falling? I use blocks a lot with boys to teach swings and just about every single one of them bends their arms and face plants at least...

    Coaches Roundoff and backhandspring development

Same! Gonna have to try it. I've seen a LOT of videos and lectures about teaching round offs/back handsprings finishing in like a standing pike, almost landing on their butts. I'm curious what your take on that technique is.

Coaches My athletes keeps on PEELING

We've had a few girls peel off the bars and it scares the hell out of me every time. So now I ALWAYS stand under them while they swing (except for the more experienced gymnasts). Biggest helping factor I've found so far is making sure toes stay low in the back swing, and grip strength. Like...

    Coaches Coaches hopping around

I've got a question for all you team coaches out there. How are your coaches divided up? Do you have dedicated coaches by level? Event? Do your coaches like to hop around (not like a rabbit)? ie With one group one day, then to another, etc. Right now that's what our team is like. Sometimes a...

Coaches Moments that make it all worth it

This one is really small but it completely made my day. We have this girl on team training level 3. She is about 7 years old, and the sweetest thing ever. But she's been having knee pains and so has been skipping tumbling/vaulting for a few weeks. Well the other day she comes up to me and says...

Coaches Long hang kip and baby giant problems

This right here. With our girls, they jump to the high bar and have way too large of a swing (usually as a result from arching when they jump), and thus can't control it for their kip. I'd have them start with small swings, that'll make the kip easier. Once they're comfortable and consistent...

Coaches How do you keep your kids busy and productive?

Hey all! So I teach a lot of tumbling classes (mostly all girls) and I never really seem to have trouble with them working on their skills in stations that I set up for them, and they seem to have fun doing it. My boys gymnastics classes however...a little more difficult. Their energy levels...

    Coaches Starting boys pre-team! Tips?

The boys are ages 7-10, and are level 3. Although I do have a few that could be level 4s easily. During their rec classes, I've actually already started working with them on entire routines. I mean they're just routines that I've made up on the spot, but they're getting a handle on connecting...

    Coaches Starting boys pre-team! Tips?

Hey everybody! First a little background. I was a competitive gymnast as a youth (age 5-15, I'm 29 now), and have been teaching recreational gymnastics/tumbling for the past 4 years or so. Our gym is small and only recently started an artistic girls team. I've been confronted with (and have...
