MAG Does your son tell you anything about practice?

I have settled into a nice routine after practice with my teen son. He gets in the car, tells me what events they did that day and 1 skill he worked on each event. I pretty much ask no questions, except maybe "how did that go?" If he has a video then sometimes he is excited to share. Then I...

MAG Recalibration of MAG levels for next season?

While I agree with you the program needs to keep encouraging boys to keep doing gymnastics, (my son has been competing since 2012!) I don't think the boys have age limits on the compulsory levels (at least they used to not, correct me if I am wrong). And there is JD for the boys to compete if...

MAG Recalibration of MAG levels for next season?

The bid packet for 2022 Easterns and Westerns has a meet schedule on it which includes older boys at all levels L7 to L9. So I think it is pretty safe to say the plan is to get rid of the age cap on these levels. https://usagym.org/PDFs/Forms/Men/dev_eastwest_bidform.pdf

    WAG Gasparilla meet question

You can drop off closer, but like mls said, there is walking once inside as well. I didn't find it a super long walk from the parking lot. The walk is longer at Disney. They do check all bags and only athletes are allowed to even bring in water.

    Parents Gymnast wrist recovery

That’s great news! Just make sure she takes it super slow. My ds is coming back from ocd In elbow and his PT is using his ability to tolerate handstand holds against the wall as an indicator of how much weight bearing to allow. Those muscles get weak fast with no weight bearing. Good luck to her!

MAG Need help / advice - injury causing inability to grip

Sounds like something is pinching when he moves that way. Glad you made an appointment. I would try stretching the hand and wrist. I’m sorry. That really stinks for him especially after just getting back.

Parents Tumble track vs spring floor

My son's tumbling greatly improved when he moved to a gym without a tumble track. He hated the tumble track. Even when he was a L4 or 5 a sub coach made a comment about how much better his tumbling was on the floor. It makes sense that it is because the timing is different.

    MAG Independent training

Our old gym allowed any team kids to come in and practice if their coach was in the gym. They had to present their very specific training plan to their coaches before practice. I only sent DS a few times as he was young. But I only saw any boys being approved to work on pommel, strap bar or...

    Parents Non Score Related Goals

This was a great thread. After reading it all I decided to not discuss goals with ds for each event the way we did when he was younger. He knows his goals (such as sticking passes on floor). But to have our “I am proud of you no matter what” goal for him to go out there and show everyone how...

Parents Son's attitude (looking for advice/support)

I agree. However at this point I believe the OP keeps bringing up issues on this forum that are about 5 year old behavior. I think she needs advice from other parents of 5 year olds. She also seems to come and drop the same type of question over and over. I think there are even 2 similar threads...

Parents Son's attitude (looking for advice/support)

I think it is time for you to take your concerns to a parenting board. I feel it is no longer about gymnastics. It is about listening, direction following, and what you want your parenting style to be. It is no longer about gymnastics.

Parents “A Letter I’ll Never Send”

I am so glad you are sending this letter to USAG. The whole sport needs an overhaul from the bottom up. So many things that make this sport crazy. And it is not fair to the kids.

MAG Can an eleven yr old compete JD?

This year an 11 year old can compete JD. Glad it’s an option for your son.

MAG What do you do for school to help with the crazy gymnastics schedule?

What about taking one of his online classes over the summer? DS is only in middle school, but we finished one of his semesters of his online class last summer, so he only had the 2nd semester to complete now. He gets out of PE too, so he leaves 2 periods early. He tends to do all his online...

MAG Skip the season or compete only 3 events?

I think this is a good choice. I'm not sure why he can't compete all events in JD though? The boys in our region competing JD last season were coming out of L5/6 at 14/15 years old. Some had some very high start values on 1-2 events, but one meet I watched and I didn't see any Giants on high...

    MAG Someone remind me...

The whole year of L5. DS's coach said he never made a kip all season unless it was in a meet or a contest. By L6 it was consistent.

    MAG Region 8 Level 7 Division I/II or A/B

L7 is very different in my mind from L6. If you can do all the bonuses in L7, you would be a solid L8. Also the region usually has few L7 boys, so many of the boys are very young for L7, and then will be set up to be national level in L8 the following year. I think the answer to the D1/D2...

WAG Working out with other gyms while traveling

We do this while visiting my Inlaws. It gives ds the exercise he needs while there. It has been a gym home away from home. It helps the gym is in our region and we see the boys and coach at meets. It is ds's 2nd favorite part of our yearly visit, after seeing his cousins. My advice is to just...

    MAG Xcel

When my other son did tae kwon do they had to sign up for Saturday belt testing. There the parent did certain activities with the child and wrote them down in a card to show progress. It was things like number of sit ups and push ups. Just brainstorming. But a way for the parents (dads...

    WAG Summer practices

I really like when a gym has scheduled weeks off during the summer. And also December. That way you don't take off a week, then find the next week your child's main coach is out.
