Parents Would you tell your DD if you thought the doctor was about to retire her from gym?

She's had back problems on and off. Been to orthos and chiros and in PT various times. This time, x-rays show several issues, one of which is effectively the end of gymnastics (x-ray has been seen by ortho, radiologist, and another doctor, and diagnosis agreed upon by all). She's been...

    WAG Bonus

For 9 & 10, bonus makes up part of the scoring, with start values being lower than 10, and gymnasts requiring some combination of skills to "bonus" back up to 10.0. At a basic level, I get it. What happens when there's a start value of 9.5, but the gymnast has a total of 0.6 in bonus? Start...

WAG Artificial leg and still nails the beam routine

Found that floating around Facebook, and found a YouTube link to make it more shareable here.

    Ad preventing scrolling

There's an ad that came up today (Osphena?) that prevents scrolling while it plays a video. Whether I scroll up or down, it snaps the browser back to put that video in view. I couldn't read the thread where the ad was displayed.

WAG Rhonda Faehn leaving Florida for USAG

http://www.gatorzone.com/story.php?id=30492 As a Gator fan, it's very disappointing, though I'm sure it's a great opportunity for her. Hopefully, UF can continue the dynasty.

    WAG Air awareness

DD (11) has always had good awareness of where she is in space and where her body parts are (didn't get this from me!). I've read all the vestibular stuff on here, and I'm not clear on all of it. She's recently been asked to do doubles (as in flipping, not as in twisting) off the bars (into...

    Parents Finding Zen

DD is headed into her fourth competition year this week, competing at level 7 this weekend. I had always assumed that by the time she hit optionals, I'd be unable to watch meets. She's doing great on three events and needs polish on bars to get to where she's likely to actually hit a routine...

WAG Nifty bars move - what's it called

Starting at about 1:50 in this, Kytra does a clear hip handstand into what?

Parents What's your criteria for driving vs flying?

We're faced with out of state meets for the first time this year, and are feeling our way through arranging travel. Was already surprised to find out that the group rates are already gone for Feb/March meets! I thought I was getting a jump on things to book the hotels now. One meet is 11...

WAG Choosing floor music - parental veto?

DD came home with some songs to choose from. I'm indifferent to most of them, but one of them I really don't care for (both parents are in agreement on this), and it seems to be high on DD's list. I'll wind up squirming in my seat every time she does floor if she picks that one. Should I just...

Parents Note to visiting gym mom

Hey, we (other parents) are thrilled you're checking out our gym. We're a bit confused that you spent so much time looking through the glass belittling our children's skills and our coaches' technique. We get that it's a sport where people can get a little competitive, but we're people and...

WAG Testing out before the 2013 changes

There seems to be some confusion among the gym management at DD's gym as to when the deadline is for testing out using current routines. There are a number of girls that are going to do current 6 before the changes, but various contacts at the state committee have given either "I don't know"...

WAG Timelines/tips for post cast removal (elbow fracture)

Minor fracture of the elbow a few weeks ago - no pins, no displacement, or anything truly terrible. She was given the option of no cast, but I insisted, as I know she wouldn't stay off it. Three weeks later, cast is off, and there is some soreness, which doctor said is expected. She's free to...

    WAG Least favorite meet yet

Just got back from what's probably the biggest Fall meet in the state. Usually in some odd location that's somewhat in the middle, but not actually close to anyone. DD drew an 8:00 AM session, and given the ~90 minute drive, we opted to get a hotel instead of getting her up so early (getting...

WAG Double back! (on the tramp)

DD did her first double backs over the weekend on the tramp. It probably took 10 minutes of the coach telling her to do it before she got over the excitement/nerves/etc and tried it. Still has to move to the tumble track and eventually the floor, but it was fun to watch. She spent the rest of...

WAG Missing two weeks right before the first meet

DD came down with pneumonia somehow. Missed last week and is supposed to sit this week even though she now appears healthy (doctor's orders). First meet is in two weeks, so the timing is not great. She was looking great and really excited about finally having a meet again. She is confident...

    Women's Individual AA Final (spoiler)

No thread on this so far? Russians just crushed bars in impressive fashion.

    Kellogg's tour

Has anyone gone? Is it worth the ticket price, or do they just do lower level skills? We have been underwhelmed by the dual ice skating/gymnastic type events that get televised, but since this tour will be coming to our area, we are curious if it is worth going to.

Off Topic A good story makes the front page

Twins bond in the gift of the other: Hailey is there for Olivia, born with epilepsy and cerebral palsy - Tampa Bay Times Good friends of ours were on the front page of the local paper today (for a good reason). My non-gymnast DD is a small part in the story. The online version is a bit...

    Age minimums for certain skills?

There have been a few threads on here where coaches state that some skills shouldn't be done at younger ages. I'm somewhat curious what these skills and ages are, and if the reasons are the same for every skill, or if there are different reasons for why to not try each skill too young. I've...
