    Parents Too much pressure

I empathize. My dd is also adjusting to middle school, is a perfectionist about school work, and dealing with 24 hours/week in the gym. It’s been ugly around here. She says she doesn’t want to miss gym, including going late or leaving early, and her solution is to sleep less and do homework...

Parents Do major meets tend to keep the schedules about the same year to year?

We have noticed this tends to be the case for most of the meets we attend. However, it does not help much for the big travel meets because they tend to have multiple sessions of each level, often at different times and days, so it doesn’t help you predict which session your kid will be in.

Parents What's the best thing gymnastics has given your child?

I have told this story here before. When my dd was fairly young, maybe in 1st grade, the PE teacher at school had the kids climb the rope. My dd was the only kid in the grade who could climb to the top of the rope, and she did it easily. The other kids all asked her what was her secret. She...

    Parents Tiger Paws Question

Wait - when you’re saying your kids don’t use the inserts, do you mean any inserts at all, or the more rigid ?plastic inserts vs. the foam ones? I thought it was the inserts that provide the wrist support. Do tiger paws without any inserts at all provide wrist support?

    Parents Incentives

To me, I feel that an incentive is encouraging harder work. But the missing skill may not be due to lack of hard work. I think it is entirely possible for people to working extremely hard to gain skills (and not just gymnastics skills!), but many skills take time to master, even if one is...

WAG UCLA joins the college scandals

Thanks! My kids are no where near starting to think about college so I think I just had this idea in my head that a walk-on is someone who doesn’t get any support from the coach in terms of admissions, but the coach lets them join the team if they get into the school on their own (for schools...

WAG UCLA joins the college scandals

I don’t know much about college athletics and recruiting, but until I read the linked article, I was always under the impression that a walk-on was someone who was *not* recruited, meaning the student did not receive any help or advantage from the coach in the admissions process and got into the...

WAG What ONE event do you think is the hardest?

I was going to right exactly this for my dd. She and one teammate do well on bars. Everyone else on the team seems to struggle most with bars. She and the other bars teammate struggle most with vault.

Parents Sick over decision to do JO

I thought long and hard about this for my dd and even probably posted about it a while back. My 2 cents: all kids are different. Some kids are fine with go-go-go. Some kids need a decent amount of downtime. All families are also different. Some families have various “non-negotiable”...

    WAG Jump to high bar

Yup, all the girls at the same level use the same bar settings, regardless of height. My dd is one of the shortest so had to jump far. But hey, when she learned giants, she said she likes being short because she knows she can’t hit her feet on the low bar (too short to reach it), so one less...

    WAG Attire deduction

Of course, my dd’s GK comp Leo this year is too big! She was sized at the gym and they sized her as a CL. All of her practice leos are CM. But since comp leos run small, she was sized, and the gym keeps the comp leos for 2 years, so I figured that CL was the right size. Nope - way too big...

    WAG Question about bar settings?

Dd’s entire level does bars on the same setting so coaches don’t need to change them during practice or meets. Dd is the shortest and the tallest kid is probably more than a foot taller than her. She likes the bar settings because she says she doesn’t have to pike to avoid the low bar while...

    WAG Gymnastics recruiting services

Thanks. What I have heard, but would like confirmation for, if anyone has personal experience, is that any Ivy as a school must have the average AI of all their recruited athletes within some range, which depends on the school’s overall average AI (without athletes). But then in addition to...

    WAG Gymnastics recruiting services

My child is way too young to be thinking about this, but I have not seen or heard gymnasts publically verbally commit to Penn early, like they do to other schools. Does Penn not allow them to post their verbal commitment on social media, etc? I have heard about academic indexes for Ivy League...

Parents If you knew then what you know now....

I find this thread really interesting. I started a similar one several years ago, I believe, and at that time, I believe all the responses were 100% positive. I find it very interesting now that it is much more balanced in terms of positive but also negative experiences. I wonder if all the...

Parents 3 weeks out and no meet schedule

Ugh, I hate the Friday night sessions the most. Last year dd had a Friday night session that was supposed to start at 7, I think, but they were running more than an hour late. And of course she ended the meet on beam. My dd normally goes to bed at 8, and it was almost 11 PM at that point. I...

    Parents Talent v. Expense

Wow, so your booster club raises $50K in sales fundraisers? I have never seen any fundraisers come close to anything like that. Can you tell us a little bit more about how much one fundraiser raises, how long you run a fundraiser for (say the frozen pizza one), and how much you find each...

WAG Taking other kids to a meet

With the additional information of the OP, and assuming that the travel costs are not a particularly big financial hardship for the OP or any of the other families, if I were the parent of a child OP was taking, I would probably insist on paying not only my child’s expenses but also some of the...

WAG Taking other kids to a meet

I assume you would be going anyway, so unless you worked it out with the other kids’ parents in advance, I would say that the hotel and fight costs should be divided by 4, and each person, including you, should pay a share. You’re probably spending a little less than you would have, given the...
