Parents Kiddo is driving me nuts :P

Have the coach tell her that you requested privates but he/she is denying them since she doesn't need them. You get to be the good guy and the coach gets to coach.

    Parents "push on the bars"

Just as general advice, it is never wrong for a gymnast to say to the coach "I'm not quite understanding what you're asking. Can you tell me in different words or show me". I can't imagine any coach ever getting upset with a respectful request for help. After all, we've all seen a kid struggle...

WAG score of 4.5 on level 4 floor?

One of our gymmies scored a 1.7 on a L4 floor routine 2 seasons ago. She had only been a L4 for a couple of weeks. It was beyond heartbreaking to see her forget the routine not long after starting and run off the floor in tears. I swear us parents were offering to buy her a pony if she would...

WAG Are parents allowed to judge their own kids?

ROFL! Truth! Those poor kids. Our MAG coach is also the state high bar judge. He actually told one of his gymnasts after the state meet that he hated to give him the score he earned because the kid never worked that hard in the gym. LOL! Of course, MAG meets are a completely different...

    Parents Video camera recommendations?

I record all of our hosted meets as well as my DD's level when we travel for competition. I use a camera that I bought at Best Buy on clearance for less than $150. (Will have to look at it when I get home for name/model) Honestly the 2 things that I am most appreciative for - HD recording...

Parents "Not messy" compitition snack ideas

Goldfish, grapes (frozen or refrigerated), apple sauce in the little squeeze container, apple slices, boiled egg, trail mix, cereal bar, turkey/ham and cheese roll up, veggie straws, carrot sticks, cheese sticks or cubes of cheese, beef sticks, etc. Water to wash it all down with. No peanuts...

WAG Ideas for big age range?

Oooh. I like this one. I'm going to suggest it to DD's coaches.

Parents What to expect first class

Sounds about right. Have her in a leotard or tight fitting clothes - no tights, no socks. It will be the basics and probably a ton of fun for her and you. Enjoy!

    Parents Rules about gymnastics camps?

No formal rule and my DD has attended Flip Fest camp the past 2 summers. She loves it. But I don't send her expecting her to gain skills. I love that she gets a camp experience and still has to condition every day. :)

Parents OPNIONS Please!! Coach out of line!!

I will never forget this little girl on pre-team with my daughter. She was maybe 4 years old. . First competition and this poor little moppet just cried and cried (not obnoxious wailing, just tears and little hiccups). She cried right up until it was her turn, when she stopped, did her event...

WAG Ideas for big age range?

Obstacle course races - jump over mat, crawl under tented mat, hop on 1 leg, etc, etc. Handstand contests - our girls do one where 1 set of girls form a circle and get into handstand, 2nd set of girls holds 1st set up, coach yells and all girls on the outside circle move 1 handstand kid to the...

    Parents Banner ideas, quotes?

How about "I pay for my daughter's gymnastics and all I got was this lousy banner". :D "Just keep swimming..." "Less bark, more wag" "Be so good they can't ignore you. --Steve Martin" "All our dreams can come true if we have the courage to pursue them. --Walt Disney" "Every moment is a fresh...

Update @Marie ? How is your daughter doing?

Parents How to help a team "bond"?

My DD has been blessed to be a gym where the parents AND the girls are a tight knit group. Sleepovers are a great way to do this. In fact, you might be able to talk the gym owner into letting you have one at the gym with the entire team. We've done these several times and they are always a hit...

    Parents Coaching PD and training?

Crap. Got a bit of a stammer there.

    Parents Coaching PD and training?

That would be for team coaches who plan to be on the floor during meets. Rec coaches do not have these requirements. A gym owner could quite literally hire anyone they want to be a recreational coach. Now, a conscientious gym owner will conduct background checks and provide ongoing training...

Parents New parent - very nervous!

Don't freak out yet! Nobody starts at 20 hours per week with $300 competition leotards. ;) Let her have this challenge and see if she enjoys it. Maybe she moves up. Maybe she decides she wants to be a ballerina. At 4, the world is still wide open for her. And enjoy this trying-it-out period...
