WAG Falls on beam... Please help settle a debate w/DD

If a gymnast falls on beam, and falls again while remounting (Both hands and 1-2 feet touch the beam in a squat, then gymnast comes right back off), does that count as two falls, or one?

WAG I am Second - Shawn Johnson

Have any of you watched? My DD found it and watched it this morning. The last couple of minutes took and unexpected turn for me, but overall, I thought it was a pretty good message.

WAG Can I post this? 3yr old gymnast on Ellen

Apparently this airs today, but my DD found this already: http://aplus.com/a/emma-rester-gymnast-ellen-show I worry this will only encourage the Instagram gym moms to continue pushing and posting their gymnast girls younger and younger. :(

    MAG All State Teams

Quick question as we're MAG newbies. Despite DS not having his best meet, he qualified to our state's All-State Team for level 4. From what was announced at state meet, this is the top 20 level 4 boys, 18 highest AA scores from ages 6, 7, and 8, then the next two highest AA scores from all ages...

MAG Home mushroom (and flexibility update)

DS is in his first level 4 season. He can currently do one circle on mushroom, and is asking for a mushroom for home. Is it worth purchasing for him? Or, like girls equipment, is it best to stay away? Thanks for any help! Also quick update on the stretching - there's been no more pushing by...

WAG Odd question re:back tumbling vs. front tumbling

Does back tumbling affect your back more than front tumbling? On Monday, my DD did a robhsbt and over-rotated it. She apparently managed to still land it on her feet, but reportedly tweaked her mid-back. She's been complaining on and off about pain, to varying degrees. The next day, we knew...

WAG When you love your kids' coaches, but Jesus H., there are 7 of them and it's Christmas.

What the heck do you buy them? Between both kids, there are 7 coaches who regularly coach them. Add in another 3-4 more that assist on occasion. In the past, we had just one kid competing, so $25 value gift cards for each was pretty easy to swing. What on earth can I get them all that they'll...

    MAG The "F" word.

Flexibility. DS (8) is not super flexible. I do think it's slowly getting better, but s l o w l y. He's like 2-3" from hitting any of his splits, though his "good leg" is closest. He HATES stretching. Coaches have been stretching him at practice (varying in intensity) since the summer to help...

    WAG Grips sizing Question

I tried searching for this, but didn't have any luck. When ordering grips online, and the size chart for a given size says 6", is that the minimum or maximum size for the grips? My DD measures just barely (like 1 mm) below 6". Do I order the size that states 6"? I have no idea what size my...

    Parents I see the light!

 Do you? Ok so not really. But I see a lot of suns on this forum. At least I think they're suns? It makes reading some things difficult. Is it just me? Is it my iPad? Have I finally lost it? Am I the only one seeing this?! Hahahahaha. On my iPhone it looks completely normal.

WAG Injuries and genes - interesting podcast?

Heard this broadcasted on NPR yesterday afternoon. I thought it was interesting, and it discusses genetic links to likelihood of athletes being prone to certain types of injuries. It also discusses some pros/cons of genetic testing of elite athletes to set ideal workouts, etc (or even allow...

    Parents Summer Camp! IGI? UIC?

We are considering sending DD to camp this summer if she can find a buddy to go (working on it). She'll have just turned 11 and is training level 7. Based on geography (not ready to have her too far away yet), we're primarily considering either IGI or UIC. Any experiences with either of them out...

    Parents Braided no-slip headbands?

Hi all! At state this month, my DD picked up a new no-slip headband. It's braided. DD fell in love with the darned thing and has now decided that it is "lucky" as it "takes her fears away". As of yet, no combination of words had successfully convinced her otherwise. Seriously, this kid has...

MAG Son invited to preteam..... ?

Hi! I have two kiddos. DD, my oldest, has been in gym for over six years. DS is three years younger and took his first tot class at the age of three after begging to try for almost a year (made him wait until he aged out of mommy & me). FWIW, after a month of anticipation, during his very first...

    WAG Grips and 'finger rips'?

Hi! I have a quick question, and I'm hoping someone here might have some advice. DD, 10, has been in her US Glove double buckle grips for about six months. Just recently, she's noticed that she has a few small abrasions on her middle fingers of one hand. She suspects it's from her grips. I've...

    MAG Question for MAG families

Hi! I have what is maybe a silly or odd question. I have a 7 year old little guy. He's pretty small for his age but fairly strong. He's been in and out of classes starting at age 3 as big sis competes. Whenever the tot/boys classes aligned with DD's schedule, he took a class. He was in...

Parents "Other" Activities? Looking for ideas.

I was talking with a fellow gym mom the other day. I was feeling a little down after DD's recent meet. It was her first at a new level and she didn't do as well as she'd hoped. She was disappointed, which as you might imagine, sort of crushed me. So I was thinking. I'd like to get DD involved...
