No. She gained skills asymmetrically. She would have been required to compete only level 3 her entire 1st 2 seasons because she was missing skills on 1 event. Not a gym policy... It's a compulsory requirement of Usag. The flexibility of Xcel gave her the ability to compete at the top of her...
My daughter is a strong optional gymnast that competed xcel at the lower levels. She started gymnastics "late" at 7 years old and gained new skills fairly quickly. Competing xcel allowed her to add new skills into her routines as they were competition ready. If she were forced into the very...
... Because the VAST majority of people in this sport are good people. And the athletes are learning more than just gymnastics. It's sometimes hard to find the positive stories when a few bad stories make national news.
Another thought... Make sure you don't put too much pressure on her, as a 6 year old, to preform well. Long commutes and talk about 'elite training' can make her start to think she needs to "do well to make mommy happy". Gymnastics, especially at the higher levels, needs to come from HER...
Hold up...Xcel is very competitive in Region 8! And it allows girls to differentiate routines based on their strengths....which gives girls who might struggle in Compulsory a path to success. I know many girls that have moved through Xcel to become very strong JO Optional gymnasts. I would...
What's different and special about States is that ALL gyms from the state show up at same meet and athletes only compete against others in very narrow age ranges. It's a big deal, no matter how they got there.
Chiming in to say...I definitely appreciate 100% AA medals. Mine has been injured and fought back to compete in her last meet of the season...but not in all events, so won't be going on to States. She came in last AA. I have to say, this medal means more than a last place finish. Please remember...
My dd visited another gym while we were on vacation last summer. For her, the experience gave her time on different equipment, with different coaching and drills. I think it really boosted her confidence. Was a good experience, but definitely not something she needed to "stay in shape". Time...
Pop music stations at our gym. we didn't listen to any pop music before gym career started. Dd now knows every word.
Found myself singing along to a catchy song a while back... Something along the lines of "blow my whistle"... ... Ummm, no.
But I know for a fact that many of the songs I sang...

Yup... Growth spurts and emotional changes pummeled my dd last season. 4+ inches over the course of the year. She was frustrated, but we tried to help her remember we are proud of her no matter what happens. She worked through it. Then so many of her skills clicked into place in rapid succession...
When my dad was 7, she took a 1-hour rec class for 1 month... Wanted more! Then took two 1-hour rec classes for a month and a half... Wanted more! Started looking around at other gyms, where she was invited to team after each evaluation. I had no idea what we were getting in to! She competed 2...
We have a similar commute. Thankfully, we have found a few families to carpool with. Girls chat, listen to music, and play games. I use the solo leg of the drive to listen to *my* music or audio books. The extra driving time (and $) is worth it to be at this new gym. I hope you find your rhythm...
Yeah. My dd got a lower beam score than we were expecting given her performance at one meet. Coach inquired. 2 judges gave her a 10 start value, but other 2 did not give her credit for connection. Coach decided not to contest because 2 lower judges were the 'head' judges, and all scores would...
I remember the first time a couple of years ago that I went to one of her meets without *ever* having seen her routines in practice. It was nice to go in and be surprised by her new skills! I tend to only stay at the gym on days when my son has practices nearby. Generally, I work on my computer...
