It makes me really sad to read about families STARTING on the gymnastics journey already worried about finances. Gymnastics is a VERY expensive sport, probably not much less than horseback riding or figure skating (for which I have experience paying as I have had children in all three sports -...
It's hard when the kids leave the sport. I think, it's because of how consuming it is, for family, as well as kids. But, she'll find a new activity she enjoys and you'll love to watch her do that, too.
Also, what are some of the ages of the higher level girls? It one thing for a 7 year old to train with 10,11 year olds. That's doable. But a 7 year old with 13-15,16 year olds? Nope. No way.
And this is why we now have gymnasts suing over being abused/ molested by USAG team physician. There is a difference between allowing your child to live their own life and abdicating your responsibility as a parent to ensure your child is safe. This culture of parental exclusion is why that...
My DD switched to ice skating. I look back nostalgically on gymnastics days.
She is on a synchronized skating team as well as competing freestyle. The Synchro team requires matching warmups ($80) bags ($50), and performance dress and practice dress ($500), matching hair, accessories...
I was just thinking, how is there a termination fee if you have to pay training fees through May ? I'd probably leave now, and just realize I'm going to have to pay double fees for 6 weeks. She's not getting great training right now anyway, and with the coaches not really paying attention...
Hmm. My DD was restricted from everything except walking to the bathroom ( couldn't even take walks for exercise) for 3 months. Then 3 months PT strengthening core muscles, THEN finally back in gym for conditioning for 6 weeks before cleared for gym. That was from a pediatric sports medicine...
Sigh. You know people like that are everywhere. I think it's the social media thing, that has made it more commonplace to talk like that. People are so used to being anonymous with their comments, they just don't think. My DDs new sport, there are parents like that, but they are...
There is an extremely interesting book, "Outliers" by Malcolm Gladwell. He examines what it takes to be an extremely successful person, whether in sports , business, etc. a good read for all parents, I think, because many have a tendency to get " stars in the eyes" over their child's...
Going to disagree here. My DD just had pain along the left side of her back. ( in the muscles that run along the backbone). She had 2 fractured vertebrae. Those back stress fractures are nothing to mess with!
I have it on good authority that the coaches at Hills do not specialize in " warm and fuzzy". Esp in the upper levels. It is, though, probably the best gym in MD. But your gymmie better have a thick skin. I think the Sportsplex coaches are a little less tough. I do know Dunno often...
Good luck to Puma jr. I feel you on realizing how stressed your DD is over gymnastics. I really hope USAIGC works out for her. Also, consider encouraging her to try some different activities. She may surprise you!
Lovofu, I definitely had mixed emotions reading this. I'm happy Sophia has found her path, and I'm sure she will be a fantastic doctor .... but- I am sad to hear we won't be seeing her on the elite stage. And if I'm feeling bittersweet, then I'm sure you are too.
My DD transitioned out of gymnastics last year. We knew it was coming so she started ice skating and archery before she was finished with gymnastics. That helped.
For ice skating she had to have private coaching from the beginning ( due to scheduling with gym) and that has been the best...
When my DD was in gymnastics, she would occasionally go skating with friends. She used the " slippery Sam" ( glider bar) much longer than the other kids, as she was afraid of getting hurt.
She has transitioned into figure skating very well since retiring from gym.
It's good to let kids...
I would be just as harsh ( and I am) when I see her goofing off instead of doing schoolwork. If you are doing your schoolwork/study/ etc, then you can watch tv. But don't play on the computer watching YouTube videos until midnight, then get a D on a test that I know you are perfectly capable...
