There was no specific injury--kind of a gradual increase in complaints. And it is both knees. I tend to distrust doctors so I don't always trust my own judgement with regards to when I need to take the kids. I also know nothing about gymnastics and gymnastics-specific injuries (both acute and...
Ok, you all have made it clear, I should take her to the doctor as well. I didn't want to hear that, to be quite truthful. As a child, I had chronic knee pain and was carted around to multiple specialists and endured some very painful tests only to be told, "it's just an imbalance in muscle...
My 8 year old DD joined Xcel at the beginning of June. She has been in Rec level 2 for two years prior, practicing 1.5 hours once a week. Now she has gone up to 6.5 hours/week. She loves bars and is acquiring skills quickly. First practice she "got" her squat-on, second practice was squat-on...
Update: DD "tried out" at old gym. First day she was put in level 4 by mistake. And loved it. Second day she was put in level 3. Didn't love it--kids were all young and it was too "easy" (boring?). Went to level 3 practice at new gym that night and came out crying. There was an issue with...
That is food for thought. Based on what I've seen and the reputations of both gyms, it would seem to me that old gym is not desperate for clients. They have a reputation for producing and people drive long distances to come there. New gym is small, dominated by Xcel, JO team is pretty...
Thank you to everyone who has responded to my questions! You all have been so helpful! This mommy is now going to put gym out of her mind until Monday, since DD is away at camp, see how the trial goes and go from there!
Maybe it is money. Maybe they have parents asking all the time about JO and the HC didn't really take me seriously, or think DD was serious the first time I asked her to look at her.
She's away at a summer camp this week, so she has no idea! My gut feeling is that she would want to go back to old gym if offered, because that is where all the kids from her school go. It is 5 minutes from our house and there are carpools from the school.
OK, thank you. MILgymFAM, I appreciate the thought about skill level being more important than the social piece. I guess I was worried because she will spend 12 hours a week with these kids and it would be nice if she could be "friends" with them too. Although who says she can't be friends...
Update...don't know if anyone will look at this because this thread is kind of old now but... the old gym has asked that DD come back for a tryout for their JO program. I guess it took us leaving for them to give her a second thought. My younger DD (8) is still at old gym in their Xcel...
I never thought to ask about level 4--I didn't want to step on coach toes. I figured they'd put her where she belonged, but they didn't really ask to see any of her Gold skills (she competed Silver but has been up-training and has kip, FHS vault, and some others--back tuck?). Should I ask? I...
Thank you all. Made the switch last night and feel good about it. I'm learning not all gyms are the same. I met with the HC and owner of the new gym to get the obligatory "This is not Xcel, this is JO, we have strict attendance requirements" lecture :) but it was done in such a nice way...
My 10 year old wants to switch gyms so that she can be on a JO team. She just finished competing her first season as an Xcel silver. She is very driven in that she is required to practice 6 hours a week, and she religiously attends an optional extra 6 hours. She says she wants to go to JO...
We went through this as well. Compromise was no handstands in the kitchen. Now going through it with the younger DD. Only she is a couch-vaulter. Bosu ball for the spring board, handstand flat-backs up over the arm of the couch.
Another thing to think about, other than skills--since you are being given the choice, maybe consider what motivates her? If she does Bronze, she may be one of the higher scorers and get more medals/podium spots. If Silver, it may be that she is one of the lower scorers but she will be working...
I have two girls, one 10 on Xcel who wants to join a JO team. Not possible at our current gym because of her age, but she has a tryout for level 3 or 4 at another gym. 8 year old DD wants to stay at current gym and has been invited to join Xcel bronze. She has no JO aspirations. She is not...
Hoping to get some feedback here...my 10 year old is currently competing in Xcel Silver. She (from my inexperienced eye) looks like she is probably at the bottom of the group skill-wise. There was some talk about having her be in the bronze group, but the coaches decided it would be better...
