I don't see coaches not attending awards as a problem. Our coaches rarely attend, they are coaching all day (usually a long day) and need to eat between sessions, if they have time, and they deserve a few minutes of down time. They will sometimes pop in to get a photo or will have one of us...
We haven't bought Destira or GK in a long time, so I'm unsure of how the sizing compares, but the GymGear sizing chart is fairly accurate. We find they run slightly big, but my daughter can comfortably wear multiple sizes (some of her older, smaller ones she can & does still wear even though...
We are also in Canada, my daughter trained 16 hours when she was level 4, now trains 20 as a level 10. Hours vary at our gym as they are somewhat flexible with athletes depending on their availability and their goals.
I find that most of the competitions we attend are pretty moderate on the level of clapping & cheering. But for our own gym, I have noticed that there is much louder & more enthusiastic clapping and cheering for every member of the team when we are at a travel meet. Something to do with that...
Beam is probably my daughter's best event (at least it's often her highest scoring event), and she did seem to get a lot out of it. I definitely didn't regret spending the money for her to go, although once was probably enough for us.
The leotard is definitely an extra cost. There were very few girls who weren't wearing one the second day, so if your daughter is one who cares about things like that you would need to factor in the cost, which I believe was around $50.00.
My daughter attended a few years ago, when she was level 8, and she loved it. She went with a few friends and it was a couple of hours away so we made a weekend of it and they all had a great time. From what the girls told me, they spent most of the time on the beam, working skills, technique...
Regarding the recent devastating news of the death of a gymnast in the States, does anyone have insight as to how to talk to our girls about that? My daughter has just turned 13, level 9. My initial thought was to say nothing & hope she didn't hear about it but, of course, with social media...
I think it probably depends on your daughter's coaches and if they are willing to do a sort of team coaching situation with another gym for her. At my daughter's gym, they have a girl that trains with them once a week that is from a gym 3 hours away. From what I understand, her gym (which is...
Yes, it's the comments that seem to make her uncomfortable. I'm absolutely sure that people mean well, but I wish we could do away with the constant comments, especially to teenage girls but to others as well, about size. It seems like people don't know what else to say to them other than to...
From what I understand, it started with the older girls at our gym after some less than kind comments made by a few boys. It's so unfortunate that no matter how hard we try to raise strong, confident girls, the teenage years are still tough and they are still susceptible to the influence of...
The body image/nutrition thread has me thinking about a similar problem that I already see developing with my daughter. Some of the older girls at her gym talk about not wanting to do a lot of upper body conditioning because they think their arms/shoulders are too big and they don't like it. I...
Ah, thank you! My daughter competed a Yurchenko tuck very successfully for Level 8 this year, I kind of suspect the upgrade will be Yurchenko layout but I wasn't sure what she needed. Good to know!
