I’ve wanted to respond to this for a while but just couldn’t get together all I wanted to say. I am in the same state as you, though opposite end of it. I am a mom of a gymnast, a former gymnast, and a forensic/child maltreatment (physical and sexual abuse) medical provider. The legal system is...
I'm just now seeing this thread. This is alarming to me. In a state like NC with several high level programs in certain areas, the more options the better for providing choice about training culture. I would think having several competitive programs near each other would be a benefit to families.
I understand that I may be reading way too much into this and I may be way off base, and maybe it’s because of my line of work, but my first thought when you mentioned the coffee-making and stuffed animal gifts was that this sounds like grooming behavior.
Agreed about Trinity. I suspect she will stay active at youth gymnastics trainings/camps and such. Grace also returning and her tears and teammates’ responses after she landed her bars dismount got me also.
Honestly, my daughter and I are having so much fun watching NCAA gymnastics together. Until recently, I'd only followed elite. We are not much of a sports family, but living in ACC territory, I grew up on basketball and March Madness. To have another team sport we enjoy watching has been...
I would honestly base things more on the gym that is a good fit for your daughter. Our state has gyms that do all of the above, but when my daughter changed gyms, it came down to where the coaches, environment and training methods were the best fit. In full transparency, I had a bit of a bias in...
I think it really depends on how your coaches approach bars and overall training. I'm a big believer is strong basics. My daughter went from 4 to 6, but she's also a naturally strong bar worker. She came from a gym that spent tons of time on kips and and never skipped 5. So while I knew she'd be...
I think a lot will depend on vault. Also, I am looking forward to all the top teams being scored together and by 4 judges (am I correct that championships has a 4-judge panel?)...maybe less inflated scoring all-around. I'm in the SEC region but also a huge PAC-12 fan, so hating that both groups...
These are all great suggestions. One other thing that may not have been mentioned is communication/transparency. Over-communication isn't necessary and boundaries are important, but our new gym communicates enough information (about expectations, schedules, injury management etc) that I don't...
I haven't been on Chalkbucket much lately and am just catching up on posts. I just wanted to say I'm thinking of your daughter and you mama, and sending you strength and healing for the journey!
One of the things that probably impacts some meet schedules is it's not only USAG...some meets host USAG (DP and Xcel), AAU and NGA. So that's more kiddos to get in over a long weekend.
Yes! I think it’s the same with my daughter. She does better with a back handspring than a back walkover…I think because it’s faster. I’m just thankful her coaches have given her the option.
It’s funny you said this…my daughter is less fearful of a back tuck on beam than a back walkover, which she has a block over. She was level 4 this last season/will compete level 6 this season.
Interesting thread! We’ve homeschooled from the beginning (so not for gymnastics) but since we moved gyms an hour away, it definitely gives us margins in our time. Funny though, out of the three of my kids, I think my gymnast would thrive the most in public school…she is driven and likes to stay...
