    2009 Level 10 Nationals

I was wondering if anyone happened to any videos of this years level 10 champion (Kayla Williams). She goes to a gym near me and I can't seem to find hardly any video from nationals. Any links would be appreciated.

    Coaches Spotting Double Fly Away

So she fell and after you caught her... she walked away without injury? Sounds like a perfect save to me.

    Chalk and water on grips?

I would not use water or scratch my grips when I was competing. It always seemed like a waste of time and a bad excuse to spend more at the chalk box.

Coaches Neat item to try out.

My girls have used this thing doing drills for vault and have done like round off 3 handsprings with it on. We even use it to do back tucks in a row on tramp and wear it doing double backs off the tramp into a pit. The way they are made, it is very easy to drop your arms to the sides if you do...

Coaches Neat item to try out.

I was at a gym over at Virginia Beach and I saw a team of level 10's using these: YouTube - gymnastics shoulder stretching device They were doing vaulting drills and doing most of their tumbling with these on. So me being the handy man I am, I tried to make a few of them myself. They work...

    Coaches Hurt, Too

Haha yea I don't know what I would do without the chiropractor. I usually get pretty bad pains in my shoulder as well especially after spotting cast handstands for a while. But a bag of ice and a few minutes rest and the pain usually goes away.

Does your gym host any meets?

We are hosting a meet in Jan actually and will have 250+ competitor turnout - our biggest so far. Our parents are expected to volunteer during the sessions that their kids are not competing. There is no set hours that they have to help, its just be here at this time and you are here until...

    Coaches BackHandSpring hand position?

I always say fingers forward because fingers out can cause elbow problems and fingers turned in can make it hard to lock their elbows.

    Level 5 vault settings

All that means is that its the number of notches the vault table is set on. I don't don't what the height differences are because I think they are in cm. There is no set number that is required. The coach usually bases the number they vault on depending on their height and how well they vault...

Coaches items to include in a gym bag?

    Don't forget bandaids.

Coaches Do you hate home gyms

People make their own equipment. Things like buying a 4x4 inch wooden beam from lowes or something and covering it for a beam or making a set a parallets (spelling) out of pile. Your right, kids don't have a set of uneven bars or a ring tower, but a very few do. In fact a parent gave us a set of...

Coaches Do you hate home gyms

I personally don't like kids doing gymnastics at home at all unless they are working on their flexibility or their strength. They almost always develop horrible habits from teaching themselves gymnastics and it takes forever to get them to do it the right way.

Coaches How long do keep kids in REC classes

Some kids at our gym will never get out of rec classes. We only put kids on the team that we feel have potential. Some, if not most, of the rec kids end up just doing a tumbling class and then do cheerleading. But I guess to answer your question, there is no set time. There are kids that have...

    Coaches Handling difficult parents

We are usually just blunt with the parents. So if they said they did it this way at another gym, we would tell them thats not how we do it here and there is the door if you dont like it. We also tell the parents every year DO NOT coach your or anyone else's kid. Thats what we are for. You...

OK Question on what type of vault is this???

I don't know why it wouldn't be allowed because it would be just like a round-off onto the board, but I don't know a single thing about high school gymnastics. I have trained this myself but I have never seen anyone compete it.

What do you like to do on your days/day off from gym??

haha sounds like our head bar coach. even with our days off she is researching gymnastics related stuff. I usually spend time on the computer and hanging out with friends. But really... I'm almost never not at the gym.

    Hurdles

We use a hoola-hoop and put it infront of a mat. Then we tell them to splash in the mud puddle and slap the mat. Its not as good as the monkey story... but it works. I have also just let them go with it. They should eventually figure it out. Patience is the key.

What do your gymmies wear in the winter months at practice?

Yea, our girls wear regular leos in the winter just like they do during the summer. They might wear a sweatshirt during warm up, but we (the coaches) get to the gym a little early and turn the heaters on.
