WAG What do gyms do to warm up athletes?

I think that is a lot for warm up. I would be tired too! I’m a silver but all the Xcel levels at my gym either do jumping jacks and punches or up to 5 minutes of running

Parents Xcel Bronze Training Schedule (hours)

My gym starts at Silver with 6 hours (3 hours, 2X a week) Pre team which leads to either Silver or level 3 is 4 hours a week

    MAG Training hours and days

I don’t know much about boys gymnastics but at my gym the girls don’t start training that much until level 7. I think that sounds like a lot for a kid that age and level

    Gymnasts Arm/core exercises with weights

I’m looking for ideas of exercise programs with weights! I really need to get some more upper body strength. I’m trying to get my kip and I’m going to a circus camp this summer and want to be able to make the most of it. My legs are very strong and heavy so I need to build up some arm strength...

Off Topic Activities for High Energy Kid

ADHD kid here! Rock climbing is a great idea, I really love it! I also recommend jumping on a trampoline, dance, spartan races, lifting weights, and ninja! All super fun and can make me tired which is hard to do! I also love the uptown abs work out on YouTube and cotton eye Joe dance. It is very...

    Gymnasts Mental block on beam

Does your gym have a medium beam? Since you got it back on the low beam that should be the next thing to try. If not you could stack mats under the high beam or put the high beam on the lowest setting.

Parents New gymnast added to group

It sounds like your daughter is happy and making a new friend and that’s all that matters. Teaching a routine is definitely practice for her too! 7 practices is still quite a few and your daughter has probably been preparing for this level since May or June. I’m sure she will do fine.

Parents Peeling off the high bar

I peeled off the bar one of the first times I jumped to high bar. I flipped halfway and landed on my neck. My chest hurt for a month! I think I might have cracked a rib but I never got an X-ray so I’m not sure

WAG What percentage of the gymnasts at your gym end up having a serious injury?

I’m on Xcel so not too high of level but we have silver-diamond. I’ve seen a handful of broken bones, only about half of them were gymnastics related. A few sprains that took a long time to heal and practically everyone has had a mild sprain. I wasn’t on team yet but according to one of my...

    WAG Likes a certain beam??

Everyone at my gym has a favorite beam. It’s pretty normal. I like either of the two that are a bit more smooth the best. One beam I don’t like because it’s close to the wall and I always feel like I’m going to crash into it

    Off Topic Halloween

Does your gym close on Halloween? How about other evening kids activities near you? Ours stayed open one year and not a single person showed up so now they close. I think that’s best. Kids should be trick or treating in Halloween!

Anon Early dismissal from school- logistics? Advice?

Yeah it’s really bad. Some kids have little to no recess as young as kindergarten. I love the book there’s no such thing as bad weather. It really explains the differences between long and short school days and the trouble long ones cause!

Anon Struggling with "what are your goals" questions for 9-year old gymnast

Since she thought gym 2 was more fun I would pick that one. BUT you mentioned gym 1 had good coaches. If gym 2 has good, kind coaches as well pick that one. Gymnastics should be about fun at that age

Anon Why is this a thing? (leotard required)

The only time my gym let us wear leggings was one winter when the heater was struggling and it was 45°-50° in the gym. We stretched in our leggings and sweatshirts and then we were warmed up and took them off. The leggings only were allowed to stay on the coldest days if we wanted but I took...

Off Topic what level should i be in?

That sounds more on the high end to me. especially the back tuck on floor and kip or baby giant. I’m also pretty sure that the beam jump requirement is 120°

WAG bigger chest support for competitions

I think the leotard is tight enough to act as a bra even though my chest is way below the chest size on the size chart. I’m not big or small chested (although the size chart sizes makes me think otherwise even though I look middle of the road) but I never started wearing a bra so my chest...

Anon Gold to L6 OR Platinum to L7?

9 is still pretty young. Another year with less hours and more play time would probably be good for her. But if the level 7 is a lot of hours (like 18-20+) the jump from 12 hours would be harder then from 16. The age of girls on both teams/where her friends are going can make a difference too...

Anon What level do you actually need talent to be a competitive gymnast?

For Xcel I think silver to gold is the biggest jump. Mentally it can be hard and a lot of tiny girls take longer because of the vault and jump to high bar. But in the grand scheme of things gold isn’t that hard to learn with some work and no mental blocks. The jump from gold to platinum is not...

Parents How Far are Your Average Meets?

We have: 1 home meet 2 meets about an hour away 3 meets about 3 hours away We live in central IL and the farther ones are near Chicago. We stay in a hotel for the Chicago ones usually but we don’t absolutely have to unless we get a 8:00 start time. This is for Xcel Silver-Platinum
