Ha! Yes, that is the biggest irony. Both parents MUST work to pay for youth sports, but youth sports expects parents do NOT work, in order to drive them to gym / practices, etc. We do carpools and my daughter also takes the bus often to gym. We somehow make it work... :)
Hi!
My daughter is level 7 and trains 18 hours per week:
3:30-5:30pm
12:30-4:30pm W, Th, F
8:30-12:30 Sun
Curious to know how many other gyms have comp training during the day where the athlete is required to miss school?
Or do most gyms have training after school?
Thanks!
Hi! My daughter is a solid level 8 on the vault and floor. She's a powerful tumbler, but still struggles with her back handspring on the beam and kip cast to handstand on bars (so barely level 7). She's super passionate about this sport - always has been. She works super hard and has never...
Thanks for your reply. There are some athletes in another squad at level 8 that are getting 18 hours / week when my daughter is getting 16 / week as a level 8. Not much of it makes sense, but there's a lot in this sport I don't understand - or like. However, my daughter is 100% passionate and...
Yes, I get that - we live it every day in the gym! :). I guess I just wish the privileged squad could get a taste of that life lesson at some point too. Thanks for your advice.
Hi!
I have a question about how gyms handle training hours between squads. At our gym, there is a [seemingly] "favourite" squad who has always had the privilege to get more training hours and special opportunities over other squads at our gym. For example, when the squad was training for level...
I definitely agree with most of what's being said here. And definitely agree it's not necessary to burst the bubble of a hard working gymnast. My daughter is one of those who has tremendous drive, a hard work ethic and intense passion for the sport, but not a lot of "natural" talent. She has to...
Thanks to you - and everyone - for their thoughts on this topic. Unfortunately this is the only gym in town, so we have no other options. But it's still really good to know their approach isn't exactly normal. :)
Yes, if the gymnast does not passed all of the physical testing by the time of the competition, they are not allowed to compete at the level they have been training for through the summer and off-season. This (not competing) is the case even if the athlete has passed their screening and...
Hi - I'm new to this forum but am curious to know what physical testing / conditioning requirements are in place at your gyms (requirements that need to be completed before an athlete can move up a level or compete).
At our gym we have two requirements - athletes must get at least a 32 AA...
