Coaches Fees - paid for a "bye" session

Quick question - how many of you pay your coaches for bye sessions? For example - if I coach level 3's at 8AM, then have nothing at the 12:30 session, but have level 4's at 5PM - would you pay for three sessions, or two? Does it matter if it is a home meet, or away? Any info is appreciated!

Learning new compulsory routines - who pays?

Thanks for the feedback! I am going to make sure our boosters really look into all options before agreeing to pay for anything.

Learning new compulsory routines - who pays?

Talk has started at the gym already about sending the head coach, a second coach, and gym owner (who also coaches) to Congress next year (2013?) in order to learn the new compulsory routines. It has been insinuated that the booster club should pay for this. Our boosters are struggling as it is...

Handstand Drop to Bridge - L4 Floor Routine Question

I have girls that can do this skill with perfectly straight legs, but when their feet touch the ground they "bounce" a little. I'm wondering how that "bounce" would be deducted? Would it be better to have them drop to a bent leg bridge with no bounce? Of course, I have already focused on...

    Open Houses

We are doing an open house in collaboration with National Gymnastics Day. I think the date is Sept 17 - which is only two weeks into our fall schedule.

Parents Has anyone participated in this (or similar) fundraiser?

The way I read into it, they really are selling the football "ticket" or sweepstakes, but they have to offer the digital entertainment package in order to comply with federal gambling laws.... We used to have a guy at work that sold "parlay sheets" every week, based on NFL. But, he would tell...

Parents Has anyone participated in this (or similar) fundraiser?

Proposed 2013 Compulsory Routines & Moving Up

I was thinking this would start with the 2012/13 season...so my point is rather mute. However, to keep it in the back of my mind for next year's group: If a gymnast struggles as a first year L5 in the 2012/13 season, and will need a second year to repeat those skils, will they be able to drop...

Proposed 2013 Compulsory Routines & Moving Up

I just finished coaching our L4 girls season. Of the ten girls, only 2 are repeating L4. There are about 3 that SHOULD repeat - but, due to parents telling gym owner "either they move up, or they quit"....they are now moving to L5. Gym owner has told them to plan on being in L5 at least 2 years...

Does your gym require a move up score?

Good question! We don't require a move up score, although I wish we did - or rather, have it available as a guideline. I would like to be able to say "Our ideal move up score is an AA average of 33 (or whatever the number may be). Although so-and-so is at 32.9, she is having a lot of problems...

Home meet- who runs the scoremaster?

Our parents do this. There are about 5 parents that regularly do it and they switch off sessions, so that they can watch their own child.

L4 - Cast after front hip

Thanks guys! Tried the panel mat drill tonight - saw some improvement. Actually had a few pushing down on the bar for a change. Worked these for a good 25 minutes, then on to the other skills. 10 minutes later, ran routines....and it was like we had never even worked on them. ***sigh*** We'll...

L4 - Cast after front hip

DD's team is really struggling with getting a cast out of their front hip circles. They all have the front hip, but are coming out of them with bent arms. I assist their coach 1x/wk - any suggestions? Also - what are the possible deductions for having a small, or non-existent, cast after FHC...

Different methods of stabilizing mini bar?

I think they were from the dollar store. We didn't make them any smaller - actually, its nice having a bit of room in them so you can lug them around better (we move them when setting up the floor bar on blocks, into pit, for squat-on drills). I think pillowcases would be great!

Different methods of stabilizing mini bar?

We use sandbags, placed in cloth laundry bags. They work well.

    Practice Meet Scoring/Review Sheets

Does anyone have an example of what to put on a practice meet score sheet, to be given out to gymnasts/parents at end of meet? For our practice meet this year (new L3s and 4s only), we want to try something different by having the other coaches give out a ballpark range for score, as well as...

    Stride Mill circle drills

I also like Coach Ben's drills on You Tube. One of my L3's was doing everything right, just not shifting the hands. Telling her to get her chest to the high bar almost did the trick. Then I spotted just the wrist once or twice, and she got it. Now if she can keep it...;)

Level 4 Vault Question Series #1 - Run

We also set the pit up to run hard and launch themselves to try and get to a mat, clear across the other side. This is their favorite. Sounds like fun, but I am not sure I understand the set-up. Could you please elaborate? :)

feedback requested to help improve routines

Very graceful routines - she has a gorgeous toe point! I noticed on beam especially that she could work on her stretch - when prepping for a turn for example, extending arms through the shoulders, lifting to high toe, and pulling in the belly. All in all - very nice routines!

    Spotting during a meet

Make sure she is lifting the top leg once she goes around - only the back leg can ride the bar. Legs start in a big split, big step, and lift once on top again.
