Coaches Fees - paid for a "bye" session

Quick question - how many of you pay your coaches for bye sessions? For example - if I coach level 3's at 8AM, then have nothing at the 12:30 session, but have level 4's at 5PM - would you pay for three sessions, or two? Does it matter if it is a home meet, or away? Any info is appreciated!

Learning new compulsory routines - who pays?

Talk has started at the gym already about sending the head coach, a second coach, and gym owner (who also coaches) to Congress next year (2013?) in order to learn the new compulsory routines. It has been insinuated that the booster club should pay for this. Our boosters are struggling as it is...

Handstand Drop to Bridge - L4 Floor Routine Question

I have girls that can do this skill with perfectly straight legs, but when their feet touch the ground they "bounce" a little. I'm wondering how that "bounce" would be deducted? Would it be better to have them drop to a bent leg bridge with no bounce? Of course, I have already focused on...

Proposed 2013 Compulsory Routines & Moving Up

I just finished coaching our L4 girls season. Of the ten girls, only 2 are repeating L4. There are about 3 that SHOULD repeat - but, due to parents telling gym owner "either they move up, or they quit"....they are now moving to L5. Gym owner has told them to plan on being in L5 at least 2 years...

L4 - Cast after front hip

DD's team is really struggling with getting a cast out of their front hip circles. They all have the front hip, but are coming out of them with bent arms. I assist their coach 1x/wk - any suggestions? Also - what are the possible deductions for having a small, or non-existent, cast after FHC...

    Practice Meet Scoring/Review Sheets

Does anyone have an example of what to put on a practice meet score sheet, to be given out to gymnasts/parents at end of meet? For our practice meet this year (new L3s and 4s only), we want to try something different by having the other coaches give out a ballpark range for score, as well as...

    Spotting during a meet

I coach L3, and one of my girls is terrified of mill circles. She will do them with a spot only. We've tried a few times without the spot (with 8" mats stacked underneath) - and she drops the leg, drops the chest, and basically just falls under the bar. Plus, she has a tendency to let go. When I...

Coaches L2/3 with short attention spans

I coach training team (level 2/3) as well as our L3 gym team - the girls are all between 4-7 y/o. They practice between 2 and 3 hours at a stretch, with a 15-minute break in between. We just picked up our new girls in June - and by now, I thought this problem would be solved: they have...

Level 3 bars - deductions for cut fwd

In teaching our new group of level 3's, I'm reminding them to keep the leg straight, lift the arm from the shoulder, and cut (rather than climb) - however, it was brought to my attention that there may be a deduction for allowing the back of the leg to hit the bar after the cut - is that...

    Does your gym have "contests"?

A few months ago, we (me and co-L3 coach) started a "gymnast of the month" contest. Each month, one of our gymnasts is selected based on a variety of criteria - not just skills - but listening, being respectful, working hard, etc. That girl gets her picture on the wall, along with a small...

    Pullovers

One of my 7-y/o, L3 gymnasts has all of her bar skills....except for her pullover! She has never had this skill, even though she worked it for a year on training team, and I've had almost four months of working with her at L3. She isn't getting her legs over fast enough. We've done tons with a...

Parents What do you prefer to sell as a fundraiser?

Well, I may have put my foot in it...:o Our booster club has a fundraiser going on at most times, which are optional, with the proceeds to go into the girls' personal accounts. So far this year, we have done coupon books, Tupperware, Joe Corbi's frozen foods, and are now doing frozen pies. On...

    Hello from PA

What a great site! So much info & support.... I have a 6 y/o gymmie that will start competing L3 in December. I also coach her, which is a challenge! My prior gymnastics coaching ended right after I graduated college. (My "real job" took up too much time). I was enjoying just being a mom and...
