Long Hang Pullover or 3/4 Giant??

A 3/4 giant passes from a hang to a clear support followed by a lower to front support or subsequent swing from the clear support. It's simply a giant swing which doesn't go to handstand. A long hang pullover passes from a hang to clear support and must end in a front support, or a deduction...

Interesting, different RO entry hand placement I came across today.

Funny sport, gymnastics is... We have been teaching our kids to do rounoffs with both hands facing forward for the past two years. The degree to which they turn the second hand depends on the athlete, but that first hand always has to go to the floor like a handspring or tinsica, and the...

    Coaches RO BHS Rebound Opinions

From a coaching standpoint, you are right-arm circles on a rebound constitutes "bad gymnastics". The kids are circling their arms with good reason: their arms are up too soon. I have fought this battle for years...if a kid rebounds from a back handspring, their arms should not be "by their...

    Coaches Front Tumbling Hurdle Technique

After watching the Byers girls get better and better at multiple front tumbing over the years, I tried the techniques Eli Rodriguez and Mas Watanabe suggested and it really made a difference. The general goal (some exceptions) is for multiple front tumbling skills to remain at shoulder height...

    Optional Bars Element Groups

Pages 66, 67 and 68 of the JO COP outline special requirements...and even tells you which types of elements are group 3/6/7. Group numbers are the first number of each element in the code. Good luck!

    Pull ups

Many muscles are involved in pullups (over-grip) and chin-ups (undergrip), but the main muscles are the Latissimus dorsi muscles on either side of the middle back-not the arms. If you are flexing your arms (as in both a pull-up or chin-up), you are always working your biceps, regardless of...

    Straight arm kips

In my experience, the bent arms happen when the gymnast kips too late as the result of extension of a glide which is not proportionate with the abdominal/hip flexor/shoulder strength of the athlete. While younger athletes may be perfoming "optimal" glides, a full extension in the glide means...

Coaches JO Womens COP 2009 RANT (about the actual book)

So I paid over $50 for the new (came out a few weeks ago) COP, and low and behold, after owning the book for less than a week, the first errata came out today...49 replacement pages! That's 1/5 of the book! Who does the editing in Indy??? USAG strikes again.

MSO's 2008 Top Ten US Gymnastic Clubs

Actually, they outline the process on the website just before the list: "Top Ten Women’s Teams in America were, from Level 10 to Level 8, producers." "...when choosing the top ten clubs MSO starts at the national level meets and works backwards from there." This explains why clubs...

    Coaches The hurdle for tumbling

A lot of interesting stuff here. The way I understand it, the goal of a hurdle is two-fold: 1). Maintain vertical momentum while transitioning to one foot 2). Initiate rotation I'm not sure if the rest isn't all relative the athlete. While it makes sense that rotation from vertical...

How long did it take you, your daughter, ir your gymnasts to learn a doubleback?

Jeesh...I'm just stating an opinion. What's up with all the personal attacks? Why so insecure? I've coached many kids who competed double backs on floor, and they've all remained relatively healthy and successful. I/they didn't defy the laws of gravity, we just dealt with it. You don't have...

How long did it take you, your daughter, ir your gymnasts to learn a doubleback?

I started gymnastics at 10 and did a double back on floor at 12. That was back in the 80s when we just trained them on floor over and over. Nowadays, I coach 11 year olds who do double backs all the time. The equipment used today easily allows smaller kids with less power to pull off a...

Strap bar: I'm not a big fan...but it works for some kids. I never allow the kids to cast on strap bar, and they get three tapswings to make it over, or they forfeit their turn. If they make it, I have them do about 10 giants. I'm a big believer in 3/4 giants as a progression. It takes a...

Level 4,5,6 routines - designed for small girls?

I'm not arguing your point here, but I'm curious: how do you propose running awards? We have over 800 Level 4s in our State. Do you really think it's right to tell a girl who scores a 36.0 All Around at State Meet that she just got 100th place? How would you determine who competed in which...

    Fall on squat on-Level 6

Actually, the judge begins judging NOT when the first skill is performed (as in optionals), but where the routine left off. If an athlete does a squat on and falls, the judge cannot take any deductions until the athlete stands on the low bar and jumps (which is part of the kip) to the high bar...

    Whipbacks??

Actually, a flexible back is a liability on a whip. The object is to stay as straight as possible in a very slight arch mid-flip. We train whips by doing tight, straight back handsprings over two 8" mats (turned sideways) and eventually try them without the mats.

    Level 5 vault settings

Whoa...there is no deduction for hair hitting the table...unless we are talking the hair right on the scalp! It's a 2.00 deduction for the head contacting the table, so I'm not sure what's going on where you are. Maximum deduction for an arm bend is .5. Judges do not judge the run or hurdle...
