Im really happy with the selections and devastated for Bross and Liukin, but i think their time has come. Maybe this is just me but i dont think that the 2012 team has is a good form wise compared to the 2008 team. Super excited for the Olympics now:)

2012 US Olympic Team

I don't know about you all, but I am SOO HAPPY. I have a feeling this will be the best team we've ever had. Time to show the world what the US is made of! Congrats to Jordyn, Aly, Mckayla, Gabby and Kyla. Team USA <3

Teams announced! Do you agree?

The 2012 U.S. Olympic women's gymnastics team is:
Douglas, Wieber, Raisman, McKayla Maroney, and Kyla Ross Replacement athletes are Finnegan, Li and Price!
Men's Team:
Jonathan Horton, John Orozco, Sam Mikulak, Jake Dalton and Danell Leyva.
Replacements:Chris Brooks,Steven Legendre, Alexander Naddour

I, with all my expertise:p, would have sent Price instead of Maroney. And Sacramone at least as an alternate

The problem is that Price does not have a second vault and McKayla has a really good chance at a vault event final medal. The USOC really likes more medals.

I agree about Price, but would have kept Maroney and made Ross an alternate. I also would have put Sacramone on the alternate list instead of Finnigan. She is a great young gymnast but I don't think she's ready just yet.

I'm so excited for everyone!!! And this is exactly who I wanted on the team! I do agree that Finnegan needs a little more experience, but since Jordyn and Gabby are both great all around gymnasts, they probably wanted to make sure they had people to cover every possible injury scenario. It makes sense to have Anna Li as an alternate because the US is weak on bars, but we really can't afford to have any other specialists as alternates.

Price improved tremendously, I was very impressed with her, and she is a solid all-arounder, but still only the 4th best all-arounder in the US, so could not compete all-around for the team. And she is not extremely strong on any event but vault, so would you really leave the best vaulter in the world at home(Maroney) so that Price could go with the US team to London and only compete vault in team finals?!
Floor - Price is not better than Raisman,Wieber or Douglas
Beam - Price is not better than Raisman,Ross or Wieber
Bars - Price is not better than Ross,Douglas or Wieber
Vault - Price could contribute here, but we would have to leave Maroney's 16.1 vault at home to add in Price's 16.05 vault, doesn't make sense

OMG OMG THE WOMEN'S TEAM IS EXACTLY WHAT I PREDICTED! SO HAPPY RIGHT NOW!!!!!!!

I don't know why but i really wanted Maroney there! I Know i'm Australian but i follow US gymnastics more as it is easier and there are more comps to follow etc. But of course I will be rooting for AUstralia for the Olympics

Two great teams. I think we really have a shot at two team gold medals. I felt so bad for Rebecca Bross. Who ever would have thought two years ago that she wouldn't be on this team. She's had such a hard time the last year and a half. Terrible way for her to go out last night.

I'm happy with the team as well. We've got some amazing athletes representing us!!! I felt really bad for Nastia and Rebecca. Just hated to see it end that way for them. :(. But the girls that are going are amazing!!!

I think they picked just the right team. They really do have maximum scoring potential this way. Price did great, but she has the misfortune of being both inexperienced and a solid all-arounder who doesn't really put up super outstanding scores on any one event (except vault, where Maroney is more outstanding), like a pp said.

I'm so glad Sarah Finnegan and Anna Li get to go as alternates, they were two of my favorite "underdogs" (if you can be an underdog when you've got some of the highest difficulty in the country/world on certain events). Hopefully Finnegan and Price will stick around for the 2016 games, because they could be excellent with a bit more experience under their belts.

I also felt bad for the WOGA girls and while I wasn't even really pulling for Nastia it was sad to see her go out like that. Nastia clearly wasn't ready though and Bross seems to have lost her confidence completely since her injury. So sad, Bross was such a lovely gymnast and I hope she can make comeback if she still wants to. I hate to say it too because obviously he's a great coach who has produced fine athletes but Valeri always seems so cold to me. I guess that's just his style but man, those hugs last like two seconds and he hardly even makes eye contact. :(

I felt so bad for Bross too. I thought Nastia handled it with class. And I was thinking the same thing about Valeri. I watched him at Jr. Nationals this year when Ohashi fell on her beam series. When she came off the podium, she was walking towards him and he just turned his back and walked away. Wouldn't even look at her.
I thought the whole thing looked strange with Bross' bars, he was just sitting there and then finally got up to check on her after the 2nd fall. The timing is just sad for Bross, 2 years ago she was the "golden girl."
I love Sarah Finnegan and I hope she can stick with it for another 4 years. I was so excited for her to be named an alternate. I also loved Alicia's attitude and leadership. She really did look like she was enjoying it all.

Maroney vs. Price.....

In the context that you need as many options as possible with the five gymnasts you select, I'd take Maroney. I know Price placed higher and had the meet of her life, but Maroney had to have been slowed down considerably for part of the past three weeks after suffering a mild concussion at the Visa meet.

I think the international judges will favor Maroney on floor and beam, if she's needed on either, as she presents her skills with more grace and nuance. Both girls are amazing athletes, but in this case being international competition and all, I'm much more comfortable with Maroney's experience and style.

Unpopular opinion time:
I wouldn't have selected Sacramone either at this point in time. We have beam covered. She doesn't do floor or bars. We're drowning in Amanars.

Granted, I'm side eyeing the Maroney decision as well--she's really only strong on vault, & concussions make me worry. Gymnastics is a jarring sport.

I think they picked the correct team. Maroney should be a no brainer as she is the best vaulter in the world. Also, she beat price on floor. What really surprised me was the inconsistency of the judging. I watch all US and many Int'l meets. Although I truly love to watch Gabby, she had many visible errors and form breaks on bars and did not deserve a 15.9. Likewise, Jordyn was scored too high on beam on the first night. I am also surprised by Jordyn's struggles on beam. For 2 years+, she has been a rock on that event, now, she is wobbling and missing connections. Geddert is even talking about down grading her beam routine, which in my opinion is a mistake because its start value is only mediocre anyway. I wish them all the best to bring home the team gold. It should also be a dog fight between Gabby and Jordyn for the all-around. Komova is still not vaulting well and Mustafyna is still looks injured.

It finally makes sense to me why they didn't choose her lol thanks for that CoachGoofy. Although im always a fan of the ones who stick in it through so, so many injuries and disappointments, so Alicia and Rebecca not making it was a little upsetting. Along with the fact that Chellsie Memmel wasnt able to even able to make an attempt at this team.

Another unpopular opinion:

I hate the shady and dirty selection process. Maybe I'm holding onto things too long, but I'm still peeved over what happened to Kim Kelly in 92. If you read the book 'Little Girls in Pretty Boxes', there are additional details to that situation in the book.
Part of the reason why they pulled Kim was due to complaints about her curvy/womanly body. I wouldn't be surprised if that played in a factor in Alicia's fate as well. The FIRST thing my husband said when they announced the names and the girls were standing out there was "They all look like little girls" and he is right. They claim the 'little girl' look scores better internationally. Sad reality of the sport I guess.

Gotta keep up with China somehow...

Although the 2008 team had more of the normal body look compared to others their ages.
