My daughter sprained her ankle a few weeks and is about to start training on it a bit more (She has been in the gym conditioning, flexibility etc). I was wondering what supports if any you would recommend while it fully heals.

It sounds like you are asking for medical advice. We can't give medical advice. I would suggest asking her ortho what they suggest.
My doctor wants me wearing an ankle brace all the time... because of a "history" of sprains. My ortho said it was not necessary unless I was going to be intentionally walking on uneven ground.
Ask her doctor if she should keep wearing whatever she has been wearing for the sprain.

Mine is working through a sprain as well and they tape her every day. Getting very expensive but she says it feels better than the three braces we tried out at the drug store one day.
Mine too, she said the tape feels and works better than any brace. Our sports med recommended 2 weeks of taping in conjunction with PT on non gym days. Then continued PT after the taping to ensure that ankle is strong. DD rolls her ankle atleast every 6 weeks it seems!

Lol, she sounds like me from 2007-2009.

Drug store braces, I found, are often not that great. We used a brace recommended by the sports doctor. OrdeRed it from Amazon. I did notice every ankle injury in the gym over the next couple of years had the same brand brace. We also went by the instructions of the PT fur when and how long to use the brace. More important than the brace was the work done in PT fur recovery. Brace only protected the ankle while it was healing. All that to say, best to get a doctor’s advice on it.

Also talk to the coach. My daughter's coach does not think the ankle brace PT recommended provides enough support, so she tapes it for her.

You need to talk with your ortho or PT (if you don't have one, I would recommend seeing one for strengthening exercises, even if the ortho says it's not needed). The type of bracing/taping is dependent on the type of sprain. Using the wrong kind has the potential of causing more harm than good. That includes taping/bracing when neither should be used.

I agree and even with my ds' sprain the goal was to work our way out of the brace. Would have happened faster, but he was finishing meet season and didn't want to make a change until he was done with competitions.

Thanks for your replies.
She is seeing a physio (she was also seeing a orthopaedic specialist but was discharged last week as initially thought it may be a fracture) and we are currently taping it up. The plan is to eventually get rid of the tape but I was just wondering if there was a support instead. There are so many out on the market & wasn't sure they were effective. We wouldn't change unless physio agreed. Coach also involved in discussions

This is the one my ds' doctor recommended. His coach used the same one for his won ankle injury, as did every gymnast with an ankle issue in the gym at the time. Not because they saw others in the gym with it, all were recommended by various doctor etc.

dd currently is using this one too, recommended from her PT. dd says it doesn't provide enough support through flexion of the foot, which is where she needs the most support when she begins tumbling again. jimjac, definitely worth passing it by the physio to see what they think. but honestly, taping seems to be the best for providing the right kind of support.
