My DD wanted to take a ballet/jazz dance class this summer to prepare for a school-based choir performance group next year. Of course, it couldn't hurt gymnastics, right? Except that there were only a couple of studios within reasonable distance that didn't conflict with gym AND were offering classes through the summer. Her gym doesn't offer any sort of dance instruction. After lots of searching and couple of trials, we found a class that met all the requirements -- classes through August, beginning class in right age group on the only day she doesn't have gym practice and open to new students. First class last night and the teacher is very nice, but the class is sort of casual and she isn't very strict. Not a lot of attention to technique, not much class discipline (girls talking, doing something other than assigned moves, that sort of thing). It will meet DD's desire to learn some basics and the vocabulary, but probably not great technique. So now I'm wondering if this could actually be a bad thing to do in terms of gym -- will she get lazy about toes, hands, etc? Or will 10 hrs/wk in the gym far outweigh any negative habits she could pick up from one hr/wk of dance?
