I read it too. He doesn't mention gymnastics and to a certain extent it is different because gymnastics uses so many muscle groups. They're not just swinging a bat over and over again. But do I worry that my daughter will have long term consequences from the wear and tear she is putting her body through now? Yes, absolutely.

The overuse injuries he talks about really aren't specific to gymnastics at all, but of course we have other ones. But as his anecdote of operating on the sons of former patients shows, some athletes and parents see benefits in high level sports despite knowing there are some risks. I don't think we should throw caution to the wind, but at the same time I wouldn't have quit gymnastics because of the possibility of injury. I don't have any problems that affect me today, I'd say I'm in better shape than most people.
