I'm a second yr level 9 gymnast and I've had 3 broken vertebre for probably the past 3 years now. I've been to 4 chiropractors and have had every treatment imaginable (physical therapy, heat/stim, cold laser therapy, acupuncture, massage therapy ect.) but NOTHING has helped at all. I used to take excedrin/advil ect. to deal with the pain but it no longer has any effect. I reacently took 3 months off after nationals to see if that might help, but all it did was make me lose 3 months of training bc I'm still the same. The pain has gotten so severe I can no longer do bhs on beam or back giants on bars so my skills/ bonus combinations are becoming limited. My teammates do everything they can from new skill ideas to keeping me in the sport bc all my coaches say is "You're a level 9 and you can't do giants or a bhs! Just quit or go to joga!" I've been in this sport for 13 years it's not that easy to give up. Many times I go home crying because I'm sick and tired of having this pain. My mother and i have researched pain managment specialists but they will not treat any one under the age of 18. If anyone has any ideas or pain managment places in NJ they can recommend please do, but my mom doesn't want me to be on drugs to reduce the pain either. I've asked her about getting Cortizon? Any suggestions/comments about that are appreciated as well. :)

Thank you

I think you need to see an Orthopedic doctor who specializes in back problems, to find out what the problem really is. I don't know where you are in NJ, but my neighbor's daughter has gone to Children's Hospital in Philly and they have been happy with the doctors there. You really need to see a DOCTOR.

Wow - I am sorry you are going through this and as a parent of a gymnast with a healing back injury I know how painful this can be. Please ask your mother to ask for a referral to a pediatric orthopedic DR. You need to have your back examined to learn why you feel this pain. Pain like you are describing is not normal and not good for you. Take care and hope you get some answers soon.

Definitely see and orthopedic back specialist. NO one can help with your back issue until you have a clear diagnosis. My DD just had surgery for stress fractures. If you were my kid I would pull you out of gym and get a qualified opinion on your back, if you cannot do a BHS you should not be in the gym period.

You do not need pain management, you need to know what is causing the pain and how to fix it. Only a doctor can help with that.

P.S. Most chiros are not capable of the kind of diagnosis you need, I would stay out of their offices until you know what the issues are.

okay, listen young lady. if you took time off and it is still killing you...like when you get up in the morning, you have no business working out. screw what your coaches say...i'm sure their back feels fine. and no, anesthesiologists are not going to start a pattern of epidurals on your back because it's dangerous. your mom is right here (drugs) and doctors are not going to prescribe the kind of drugs that are used on adults for this problem because it will lead to nothing but trouble for you. and that is where you are headed if you keep working out. get your mom on this site with you. you need to go see a specialist.

and to the parents reading this post, read the part above in her post where she states that advil and excedrin no longer work. even these are powerful meds in ped's. if these 2 stop working there is an immediate problem. that's all.
