My 10 year old dd Level 5 has been experiencing back pain in her lower spine when arching her back for several weeks. X-rays and MRI show no injury. We have rested her, used over the counter pain meds, ice, heat and are starting PT.
Being that it appears the pain is upon bending in the spine, has anyone experienced this same pain where essentially they do not know the cause? The doctor is recommending no hyper extension of the back until pain subsides…

I had to see a sports med back specialist to get answers. Was told it was most likely that arching was inflaming my disks. I've found the pain is gone with limited arching skills. I don't even do backbends.

Avoid arching skills- thats what i try, though in my case MRI showed a minor disc bulge... nothing helps though- it hasn't improved in over a year even with 1.5 months of no gymnastics and essentially bed rest.

Absolutely... it is probably the start of something. We have had a couple of gymnasts with normal MRI / imaging and still back pain. Both eventually diagnosed with "facet joint syndrome".

Sorry... didn't really finish my thought there. I would listen to the Dr. and heal it up now before it gets worse.

As an aside, have your tried topical ibuprofen? One brand is voltaren.

This would be off label use but is sometimes VERY effective for managing sports injuries.

Our daughter who is a level 7 gymnast experiences the same lower back pain with too much arching. Focusing to ensure her back handsprings are long limits the irritation and allows her to tumble without pain, but any time she’s too focused on one skill such as back handsprings on the beam for an extended time it comes back.

My daughter has been dealing with this for 6 months now. At first the pain didn't allow her to do much. She was on full restriction for 3 weeks. As soon as she started back to her skills, the pain returned. After lots of PT, the pain did get a bit better and she's been able to keep it to a manageable pain level but she has to limit back extension. The MRI showed a mild bulging disc but they aren't sure if that's what is causing the pain. It sounds like it will be something she just has to deal with from now on. The more she can remove back extension, the better it feels. For now she does all front tumbling on floor and has two back extensions on beam that she can tolerate.

Omg its the same situation with me except that its been a year and 3 months and I did no gymnastics for 1.5 months...isnt going away so I just avoid bwos and fwos

Pushing through any sort of back pain is not recommended. Pushing through back pain can lead to a lifetime of issues. If you are having back pain… please see a Dr. and follow their orders.

Remember… second opinions are not a strange thing. If you feel you are not getting answers from your Dr… just get a second opinion.
