Do some gymnasts find clear hips to be a scary skill? My daughter has struggled with them for years. Before taking a 13 month break she had decent upper body strength and could do a nice back extension roll. I think some of the issue now is strength but wonder if it could be something else?? She doesn’t tumble backwards and had a fear of vault before taking a break from gym.

Sure... but there is at least one person that finds every skill scary. I would say from my own experience that gymnasts that find a clear hip scary either...
  • Work through the fear until they are no longer scared of it
  • Find an alternative small circle (like a toe hand... stalder... weiler kip... etc)
  • Stay relatively low level (typically Level 7 or below at our club)

Yep. They can be scary. But many gymnasts are strong enough to do the skill but struggle to understand the timing and action. It’s not unusual to get stuck on it.

Do they work them on the strap bar? I like to have my gymnasts work them in a low strap bar until they are very confident as this eliminates a lot of the fear.
