Coach to gymnast ratio for team

I am wondering what numbers your club uses for a coach to gymnast ratio for team. Also do coach's only coach certain events or rotate??

I also want to know if it varies depending on the level of the kids?? Say less coachs for optional who should and need to be more self motivated than lower level kids.

I am just looking for what others do around the country.

Im not sure what our ratio is but we hav 5 coaches. 1 on floor, beam, and vault. 2 on bars.

We have 1 or 2 coaches to 7 gymnasts. Normally 1 coach, but if we have assistant coaches on any of the days they will work with 1 group too. I personally think 1:5 is perfect, after that I think there really should be 2 coaches just purely because 1 coach can't see/support anything - however that isn't always possible so we have to make do!!

We do team coaching rather than event coaching, If we did specialise though I'd chose Bars or Beam!

For team (L4-L10) there are always at least 2 coaches and they work all events. They coach the whole team not just specific events but we know which coaches are better at what event so when we have a private we know which coach is the best choice for specific events.

For the Pre-teams it will depend on the size of the class but usually a 6:1 ratio(most are preschool aged). Most of the time I do see 2 coaches.

For the rec classes - school aged classes is an 8:1 ratio but usually have 2 coaches because there are usally 12 in the class.

Until yesterday, we had 2 coaches to 5 gymnasts, just not always at the same time. As of last night, we acquired 2 new girls (YAY!) so now it's 7 girls, 2 coaches.

Our coaches train all events, so the girls will feel confident with either at meets.

Dd's gym does event coaching, but the coaches are capable of doing the other events too. Dd's group has about 7 girls in it and it consists of both levels 8 & 9. It works out well because the group gets along well and the girls are all similiar - personality-wise. This season HC happens to have about a zillion level 9s, well really about 10/11, so they can not be all in one group. I like how they also look at personality and age when doing the groups and sometimes it will change based on the needs of the girls (skill-wise).

It depends on our level. 4's have 2 coaches with 14 girls, 5's have 2 coaches with 18 girls--they condition the group together, then split and go to 2 different events. Level 6 and up have approx 8 girls to a group and then the optional coaches rotate between the groups. Each coach has a favorite or strongest event but for the most part they will do any event--it depends on the night, what groups are in the gym and who is on what event. Clear as mud right!

Level 4 and 5 are about 8:1. Level 6 & 7 are 6:1. We have been as high as 12:1 at some times. An experienced coach who knows how to use stations can be effective with 12:1 or even more, although it's not best over the long term.

For the most part our coaches stay with their groups. Although we do rotate around a bit due to one coaches being stronger on vault, another stronger on tumbling, etc.

My dd's group has six girls and 3 coaches - however, they only ever have one coach at a time i.e. one for beam and floor, one for bars, one for vault, etc. The coaches are somewhat interchangable for tumbling and bars, but they pretty much always have the same one for beam! So, I guess our ratio is 6:1 and that holds true for most of the groups at our gym - we currently have approx. 70 comp. and pre-comp girls.

one of the biggest issues with the higher ratios is spotting and shaping. it's just more work with more gymnasts and less time per gymnast. you can get creative with time management and circuits and equipment but when spotting certain skills it becomes a burden.

younger ages work more optimally with lower ratios. older ages or levels can go higher but it gets into the above issue or a lack of equipment issue.

in many programs, you can event coaches that will rotate day to day so they end up coaching all events though in many upper level programs, you will have specialized coaches per event or choreography/dance.

For Rec., i think there is supposed to be a 6:1 gymnasts to coach ratio, but i am not sure. For team, we have about 11 level 4's, and they have 1 coach who coaches all 4 events. (in all, we only have 2 coaches, and they all coach all events.) The level 5,6,7 coach will help coach them a lot and vis versa. The other coach coaches the level 5,6, and 7 girls, we only have 2 level 5's, 1 level 6, and 3 level 7's. We work by ourselves a lot because the coach is always busy in the office, so the level 4 coach usually coaches us a bit.

Our primary squad - equivalent of about levels 3 - 5/6 has 13 girls and almost always 3 coaches. They have condiioning circuits on bars when they are not on the bars, and we have enough beams for abount 2 or 3 to a beam. Tumble and vault is always done in 3 groups e.g. fast track, tumble track and trampoline. This group is age 6 - 9.

The intemediate squad has about 12 again, and they usually have 2 coaches. The gymnasts are aged 10 - 15 and about levels 6 - 8.

The elite squad had very talented girls aged 9 - 11. There are 8 gymnasts in this group and they have 2 or 3 coaches. It might sound a lot of elite-track girls out of all the squad but 4 of them have moved from other gyms because of our facility and coaches.
