Parents Getting discouraged

To clarify.

There is no science or data to support keeping gyms closed. They can open with appropriate mitigation.

Especially since most of the state has a test positivity rate less than 3% and has for a month. Gymnastics facilities in northern MI have been open since the beginning of June so we have a safe model of what to do, the Governor just won't budge. I don't know how these businesses can sustain 6 months without revenue. That's not even mentioning how hard this has been on the athletes (and us parents.)

The Twitter campaign by the parents trying to save the businesses was muted by the Governor and the Lt. Governor. It's been beyond frustrating and so disheartening.

Different reporters around the state have caught the story as something different to report on. One metro Detroit station and one mid-Michigan station both had interviews with gym people yesterday, and the message from the governor that was part of the story I saw, was a little less rigid than her previous statements. Hoping we are making a tiny bit of progress. Our team has lost a few girls to other sports already.

Saw online that a smaller gym in our general area is closing. They posted all their equipment and furnishings for sale on Facebook. Heartbreaking.

I hope you get a date to restart soon, both DD and DS have been out now for 24 weeks (we are in U.K.) so I understand how you feel. We finally have confirmation that DD goes back mid September and DS might restart September 1st (different clubs). They are both so excited to be able to start, DS had said he didn’t want to go back, but now there is a potential date he can’t wait.

This is week 24 for us. Governor said yesterday she has no intention of reopening anything. Now that schools are opening I imagine our #'s will increase which will be the nail in the coffin for gymnastics in our state. It's utterly heartbreaking.

Governor had started a regional reopening in June however, she stopped that. No matter how good a regions numbers are (even test positivity below 2%) she's not allowing anything new to reopen. There's a lot of anger in our state and people are "screaming" for answers yet are given none. This has all become such a political game between so many "leaders" and unfortunately, we citizens are the game pieces and the ultimate losers.

sadly, at a certain point the business owners will either throw in the towel and be forced to close down their businesses and file for bankruptcy OR they will decide that they will reopen and to hell with what a Governor says (as this is not a law passed through any vote by representatives, but just the demands of a Governor). It's either open and risk having to defend yourself in court, or fold and seek bankruptcy

For how long is this intention to not reopen anything? It seems illegal and unconstitutional to keep things this way. Yes, infections continue to happen, but so is recovering by a count of 99.4%. The death rate is minuscule, and miserly among the highest risk category. I understand increased care with that group, but it’s wrong to keep everyone else basically imprisoned with no endin sight. I hope someone helps the people out with a lawsuit or injunction. You all desperately need some intervention!

It is so crazy that Michigan is still not allowing anything to reopen. I read up on it after seeing your post and not even private lessons are allowed. Is Michigan the only state that’s like this? What about pools and other sports?

I’m sorry. “Discouraged” is a very polite way of putting it.

These poor gym owners and kids. At this point it is tyranny from Mrs. Whitmer and where is the scientific data that supports making a business like a gym stay closed while numerous other businesses remain open such as bars?

The cases and positivity percentage don’t support it and in the case of a gymnastics gym facilities have high ceilings and appropriate distancing measures and other guidelines can be met successfully. Our gym has been open since May 18 and no one has fallen ill. I have extended family that works out at Golds gym and they have been open since June 1 and no illness. Our cases in our city are at 11% positivity which is horrible.

That's the thing. She absolutely won't give any answers as to when they can open. She just avoids answering and says she's basing everything on the data and science (which she clearly isn't.) My daughter's gym is in an area that has less than a 2% positive test rate.

Fitness gyms won a case against her in June and at 9 pm the day before our businesses were going to open, an appeals court agreed with her and all businesses were kept closed (they had been planning their reopen for a week.) Bowling alleys are suing her now. She won't even acknowledge the closed businesses or offer them any financial help.

Pools are closed and fall sports are on hold while the people in charge of high school sports try to get the Governor to open the sport facilities. As of now, absolutely no sports inside (gymnastics, swimming, diving, volleyball or competitive cheer) football, soccer and cross country can only practice. Marching band season was canceled because they couldn't all practice together (outside, on a field, wearing masks while not actively playing!)

At least one school district has cancelled fall sports all together, I'm sure other school districts will make similar decisions soon (seeing how several of the low risk sports can't train still). It's so disheartening, especially when we keep hearing it's based on "science" yet regions that have met her guidelines are STILL not being move forward :( Day 166 and counting...

Our school district and most of the ones around us are doing virtual learning for the first quarter/semester, so all fall sports through schools are canceled here, but club sports are restarting so baseball, soccer, indoor swim is on. Football and basketball are still up in the air, but at least we have some sports. In Virginia our numbers are pretty comparable to Michigan's. It is baffling that Whitmer refuses to say WHICH metrics she is using or what numbers she is looking for before she will allow gyms to open. It's like she's just making it up as she goes along. Is there ANY other state that is as restrictive as MI?

In our state gymnastics was granted a special variance. Leaders in gymnastics community contacted governor everyday . It was explained to him why gymnastics is unique in the inability to just stop, how it effects the girls in terms of college goals, , etc- whole nine yards. They pushed have really hard and gymnastics was granted the variance.
Lockdown started March 10(?) They went back July 6th, 9 hours a week and August bumped up to 16.( DD is L7/8)
Team wide anxiety and lots of frustration. Tough for a L 10 to lose her cast handstand:( yes a L10) Lots of girls going on vacations (where during Covid I don't know) so several hardly there .Coaches trying to take it slow to avoid injury. They seem to have decided that if there are any meets, everyone will most likely compete last year's level.
DD is moving along nicely and not missing any gym time except this week- strained back muscle.
DD attitude improved just hearing the return date and has gotten better and better as the hours increase and her skills come back. She has learned a few knew ones but certain other ones she had are currently elusive.
Our Public pools are open for lap swim only, 12 people per session by reservation, no kid friendly open swims or anything like that.
Fitness clubs can have 5 person classes with social distancing.

Football practice started at the high school and cheer try outs are being held.

We used to be the epicenter when this all started. Just hoping to avoid another lock down this fall.

Oh, almost forgot, DD school district might go one strike...supposed to start September 9th, but contract talks fell apart and district refuse to go back to the table.

We've been burned so many times before so I use extreme caution with any "potential" good news. That said, if she does ipen them, the excitement from the girls in our gym will be felt for miles! They are SO sick of the parking lot. My little one got grips when we assumed they could return July 6. She's been dying to actually use them.

There is some cautious optimism around here, but we are not ready to even think about the possibilities for fear of more disappointment. But with so many schools opening in person (not ours) already or soon, and casinos (!!) open at limited capacities, I do not know how much longer businesses will hold on.

I have heard rumors that more than one gym in Michigan has been having kids practice indoors. That honestly breaks my heart. Integrity? Hmm.
