How do they pick who goes to the Olympic trials?

So I finally got to watch the Secret Classic with Puma Jr tonight and she had a lot of great questions! The biggest one was how they decide who gets to go to the trials. Obviously Simone Biles ect are sure to be invited, but there must be some on the bubble just to get there? Is it just who Martha wants or is there an actual way to qualify to go? Sorry if this is a dumb question! I didn't want to give her bad info...

Thank you! So it looks like the top 8 at P&G go, and then whoever else they want, right? Is there a maximum number?

Yes top 8 AA then any event specialists who might have a shot to make O team and any girls who have a shot at being in the mix(maybe nursing a minor injury at P&G and can't do AA there but can be ready for trials). I would expect to see:

Simone
Gabi
Aly
Laurie
Maggie
Ragan
MyKayla
Madison
Rachel
Alyssa
Ashton
Brenna
Amelia

Pretty much anyone who is capable of above 57/58 AA or can hit 15+ in an event I would expect to see at trials.

Thank you! Out of curiosity, is this list in order of your opinion of who has the best shot of making the team? Puma Jr is pulling for Ragan!

Close but not quite, I would have Ashton in the 5th spot . Maggie is a question mark right now. Right now I would have Ragan in the mix of 3 or 4 for alternate. But when choosing an alternate, vault and floor are the priority since those are the events a last minute injured athlete will most likely miss. Ragan probably has the weakest vault of all the girls in the mix and her floor has been inconsistent so far this year(pac rims) and almost sitting down her beam dismount at classics didn't help her chances.

It was my understanding that the only one guaranteed a spot is the first place AA finisher at Olympic trials. The rest is decided by coaches in the back room.

In other words the coaches decide what they need and who they think will fill that need.

She's asking about Trials, not the Olympics...I was confused at first too!!

I actually don't think they have decided all the spots yet. I think there are a few spots up for grabs, and who gets them will depend on many factors....and I for one am glad I wouldn't have to make that decision. Pretty much anyone they choose could help the U.S.A. kick butt...talk about a deep playing field...it's ridiculous.

You are correct, sorry to be confusing! But @Deleted member 18037 I think you are also correct on both accounts-I think its all decided (both for the trials and the actual Olympic team) in that magical back room. And I assume by now they have a pretty darn good idea. And yes, the only thing (as far as I understand) that is guaranteed is that one Olympic team spot being the winner of the P&G. They might as well all hope for Simone, because if there's some bizarre upset, Simone makes it anyway so that's less chance for a bubble kid. It's like when they are picking the teams for the NCAA tournament-a Cinderella team that wins their conference in an upset gets an automatic bid making (in theory) less at-large bids since the team who "should have" won the conference tourney will get into the big dance anyway. (Sorry...can you tell I live in a basketball town?! Lol) It is so sad how many amazing gymnasts are going to be left off this team!! :(

Sort of....if the "should have" team is from a smaller conference they very easily become a "bubble" team in jeopardy of making the tournament and missing the dance because the big conference teams typically take those "at-large" bids.

Absolutely. But if you're a bubble team, you're hoping ALL the "should wins" win their conferences not just yours because that increases the number of at-large bids for you.

I guess what I mean is if I'm Laurie, I do NOT want Maggie to win the P&G. Because now Simone is still in, and probably Gabby and Ali too, so now I'm fighting the others for one spot not two.

Agreed! If you are Laurie, you are secretly hoping Maggie has not recovered from her knee injury and Aly and /or Gabby has unexpected major errors.

I think the only guaranteed spot is the person who wins trials- not P&G. It seems widely assumed that will be Simone. Last Olympics everyone thought it would be Jordyn but it ended up being Gabby.

Ye, you're right! That's what I meant-sorry! Good catch :)
