How long do you have to be at a gym before you can compete for them?

How long do you have to be at a gym before you can compete for them? And is that for competing all together or can you compete for them just not count for their team score until whatever it is?

By USAG rules? I believe you can join a gym one day and compete for them the next, assuming you have the necessary USAG memberships/fees/whatever and they can get you signed up.

However different gyms will have their own rules -- or they may have no "rules" at all and just play it by ear.
 
And is that for competing all together or can you compete for them just not count for their team score until whatever it is?

I don't believe that you could compete for them and not count towards their team score. However, the extra score is likely to benefit the team since team awards are determined by the top three scores on each event -- not the total team score.
