If you read “Nadia” or “Little Girls in Pretty Boxes” then it wouldn’t be all that surprising. Obviously it was worse when they were in Romania and could basically treat those girls however they wanted, but people can only change so much. Unfortunately, their methods produced medals and they came to the US which was not a gymnastics powerhouse and they were tired of losing. I personally had coaches who were high level gymnasts in foreign countries and the stories that I have heard definitely would give you something to think about (and no, these coaches did NOT coach the way they were coached, so I do think that as more gymnasts who trained under the “old” system start coaching, things will slowly start to move away from the Karolyi-style - which yes, it works, but at what cost to the athletes).

This article is so disturbing. Hopefully the whole culture of gymnastics can start to change for the better. I don’t even have words strong enough for how badly I feel for these poor girls.
