I've just read something on fb which says brazilian culture is to clap and cheer on an athlete after a mistake to encourage them and bring them back up. It's not meant as "oh good, they fell", but "come on mate, get back up, you can do it"

Cultural differences maybe?

Watching it i didn't pick up on negative cheering at all. The crowd was noisy and excited, that's all that i registered..

Interesting - DH was an international Rugby player, he used to kick the goals. He has told me that when he stepped up to kick he didn't hear a thing, he was in his zone, either cheers or boos ( and anyone who has been to the Shed End at Gloucester has heard them baying for blood). He just did his thing in his own world.

My dd took it as every time he erred meant Brazil knew they were getting closer to getting two medals, so they got more and more excited each time. She said it would be hard for sure, because it is such a difference.
