Does anyone know - if hand sanitizer touches a foil/mystique leo, would the alcohol take the color off and leave a silver spot?
Anyone have any experience???

I did not know that about sharpie! LOL!
So, okay, it definitely could.

DD's leo came out of her bag this weekend with a big (quarter sized) spot on the back that is now silver, and a couple random smaller spots too.
I know the coach's baby was sick, and coach is fighting it herself - I'm wondering if she was using hand sanitizer to keep from spreading anything to the girls, and inadvertantly may have touched a leo while spotting, with it on her hands.

I have absolutely no other idea.
Spots were not there when she put it on, and when it came off it was in the hotel room, and hung up into suit bag. And they were there when we took it out at home.

Not trying to blame, just wondering what the heck could have done it.

And now trying to figure out if there's any way to make it look any better... maybe use a matching sharpie to at least make it look like a purple spot rather than blatant silver... UGH.

Is it a training suit or her competition one? If it's just a training one, I'd suggest trying to dye it with fabric dye intended for dance leotards. Not sure how well it would take to the mystique, but again if it's just a training suits it's worth a try. However, if it's her comp leo I would contact the company and see what they suggest.

It is the million dollar diamond-encrusted piece of lycra that she competes in.

But I (oddly) hadn't even thought about calling the company! thank you!

No that happens to mystique leos when they get wet with anything like juice or Gatorade (probably the acidity or sugar) and then it sits. I don't think hand sanitizer on a person would do it because it would have already dried on their skin. Something might have spilled on it and then it dried on its own. After awhile it eats at the dye or something, I'm not really sure how but I've seen and had it happen. It seems like some of the foil effect finishes and colors are more prone to it also. Brighter colors like purple seem more affected so I'm not surprised it's purple.

I accidentally got laundry detergent directly on a practice leotard and it left silver spots! (It was an unfortunate laundry accident in my early laundry doing days) So I'm sure handsanitizer could do the same. I hope you get some help from the leotard company! It's really too bad that it didn't just happen to a practice leotard instead of the expensive comp leotard :(

Thank you all!
The company had no magic solution for me... I think I'm going to go the sharpie route, and see what happens.

Another child might be okay with this, and laugh it off. Unfortunately, not my daughter. I'm trying to decide about telling her now, with a few days before Saturday's meet, or just doing my best and winging it. But if someone points it out at the meet, she will fall apart. (not over the leo, but things like that on comp day will set her off)

When she's ALL done with the leo, I feel like seeing what hand sanitizer will do to it.

There is nothing at all that spilled on it, so sanitizer is the only thing at all that I can think of. I can ask my daughter if there "might" have been something else, but truly she was within my sight the entire time she had it on.

Her old one had areas that rubbed dull, but never just a definitive spot like this. UGH.

instead of sharpie, maybe the fabric spray paint if there is a color that matches. it may blend better than sharpie.

I might try that!
Can you post a picture? I had the same thing happen with our purple foil too, but it turned into a black spot instead of silver.

I will take a picture tonight when I get home. It really just looks like the color disappeared :(

Is this by chance a GK Leo? Our old team had a number of team Leo's arrive from GK with random silver spots in the purple! Never did figure out what/how/why! But they were perfect circles on the purple mystique!

Thank you all!

The effect also might have just rubbed off in that area if she was sweating on her back or possibly has something in her floor routine where the back of the leotard could have friction on the floor? The foil effect tends to rub off under the underarm area from the sweat for some gymnasts. But I imagine that could happen on the back as well. This seems more likely to me than hand sanitizer that has evaporated from being spotted but if wet hand sanitizer got on it, I'm sure it would create a spot. Just not sure it's likely that wet hand sanitizer would be on it.

I've actually done to to a purple foil leotard and it did turn silver in spots. But I know that juice spilled on it. Only some spots turned silver though so I'm not sure why. The underarm area in that leo also definitely faded or turned silvers for a lot of people too although it wasn't as noticeable as you would think unless you were looking for it because in that particular leo there was also whitish/silver mystique that met the purple around the armpit area. The purple part was kind of the "dot" sort of foil effect, not the wet look mystique that is more popular now. But the dye type is probably similar?

without seeing it I would say that something has lifted the foil overlay. Mystique is a coloured lycra (spandex) background with a contrasting foil overlay, as gymdog says placed in "micro dots" onto the fabric. This is because the foil does not stretch so the fabric stretches between the dots.

I would assume that something has removed sections of the foil. The issue with filling it in again is that most dyes and colours do not have the reflective quality or "sparkle"of the foil.

maybe some of the specialist fabric paints like these http://www.empressmills.co.uk/shop/...llic-fabric-paints/regal-purple-fabric-paint/

again, I would test on some scrap fabric first

Okay, SO, nobody else had any issues.
I finally showed DD, because I wanted to ask her about hand sanitizer.
No to the hand sanitizer. Never saw the coach use it, nor any of the girls. (I really was reaching, because nothing else made sense)

At this point, it's being blamed on that it possibly was NOT hung up directly after the meet, but that maybe she left it on the bed while we changed for the pool. Then back from the pool, quick change to go watch friends, and possibly wet pool hair touched it. That's what we're going with, as there is no other answer. Although I'd swear she gave it to me to hang it up when she took it off. But, maybe not... This does indeed make the most sense.

As for her reaction:
She was not thrilled. It "just made my day OH so much better..." (if she were older and cursed, it would have been "f'ing better" I'm SURE).
I brought it in to show the coach, to see if anyone ever had this happen and if so what helped it. They have no idea, BUT, DD was there while I talked with the HC, and I think the fact that coach didn't freak out helped DD.
Our gymmom who handles selling used leos was trying to contact a girl from a couple of years ago that could be DD's size and see if she still has hers. DD wasn't thrilled about using someone else's ("I'd really prefer to compete in a leo that I'm USED TO". Yeah, all THREE freaking times you've worn it??? but I digress).

I went to office depot and got a sharpie, a gel pen and a sharpie paint pen. Paint pen adhered the best, but the color I got was too light, so I'm going to Michael's tonight for a better color.

Then, this morning I remembered an old teammate that was about DD's size, but isn't competing this year. I texted mom, and yes, same size leo. Only worn twice. Mom works at DD's school and will bring it in for her tomorrow!!!! As a mom, I'm like JUMP FOR JOY!!!! YAY!!!. As a slightly insane neurotic crazya%% 14 year old girl, she was like "I'll see. I'll have to see how it fits". This kid will drive me to the asylum!!! Regardless, I will do my best on the spots, and she will have another leo to try. I've done all I can!!!

Here's the "big" spot. Size of a quarter. Without the light right, it's not so bad, but look to the right at the smaller spot that is catching the light. That's how the big one looks...
I think @Iwannabemargo is spot on (Oh my,,,, no pun intended at all! LOL!) I'm going to try for a pearly paint pen to maybe have some shine. That's the best I've got.

No, Alpha Factor. But it definitely isn't a defect. Definitely something that "happened".
