Our gym is new this year. Our booster club is looking for fund-raising ideas. We are thinking of doing a lot of fund-raising now and over the summer before our new competition season in the fall. This way, the kids can have some money in their accounts to help cover competition fees and coaches expenses.

Anyone have any great fundraising ideas that have worked well?? Also, do you have any thoughts on money going to the booster club general fund, or the money going to directly each child's account based on participation of the child/ or child's family? Apparently we have had some issues already with a few famlies doing the majority of the work. Thanks for any help!

Hi Claire,

Fund raising success all depends on the amount of effort the booster club is will to put forth. There are excellent ways to raise funds selling all kinds of things but it takes commitment by those involved. As to the division of funds, if your club is registered with the IRS as non-profit 501 3c then the rules are that all funds have to be shared equally among all members and individual accounts based on participation are not allowed. This is one of the biggest problems with non-profit status and it can cause all kinds of problems (as you have already noticed).

There are many companies out there that are willing to have you sell their products, but you have to take into account, they get some of the profit. Also in this economy its just plain hard to convince people to shell out more money to support yet another organization.

Might want to sit down and come up with an amount you would like to raise and then see what options there are. Selling something every couple of weeks gets real old, real fast. Used leo sales, bake sale/car washes etc. don't require any up front money and can be easy to hold at the gym. Some restaurants have some deals for 501c3 organizations to come in and order a pizza on a certain day, host a breakfast/lunch with you getting some of the profit. Some booster clubs opt for just a couple of big fundraisers(ie dinner/silent auction) and don't bother with the monthly sales thing.

You may want to look into working concessions for a local college sports program or even pro teams offer concessions work, but it may be looking at waiting for a year to get into that.
