I feel like there are usually more than 2 juniors making a run for the Senior national team, am I just remembering incorrectly? I guess this group of guys just opted to place well as juniors? (I missed the beginning of the Jr. broadcast- so maybe they talked about it then)

I do not know about previous years, but this year it sounded like 4 were invited, and 2 went to Sr. and 2 did not. One who went to Sr. has a brother competing in Sr. so that is cool. J. Horton explained that in his opinion either is a good choice. On the one hand it would be super exciting to compete with the seniors, on the other they have to assume they will be in seniors soon enough so why not stick with the junior meet and finish big.
I watched both days of Juniors with my sons. I thought it was super fun to watch! I just wish the commentating was a more informative and less negative. This kid who looked all of 12 pulled off an iron cross and Horton was like "it's low."

I feel like 4 is probably closer to what I recall from the past, but I guess it just depends on if the kid wants a title or the prestige of competing against the seniors. I can see why Kevin Penev chose the senior option for the chance to compete with his brother. There is a big enough age difference there that they have probably never competed together before, so that is really cool for them.
I actually looked up the kid who did the iron cross on rings because I was sure he was not a day over 13, surprisingly enough he is a 2001 kid.

Both Eddie Penev and Kimble won two events tonight and neither named to the National Team - is there a chance they will be named later? Also - very cool seeing both Eddie and Kevin medal on the same event!

Mikulak and Naddour weren't named either and I think there's a pretty good chance at least one of them will be on the World team. So I can definitely seeing them adding on a few names in the weeks/months to come. I'm guessing they just opted to name the top 8 AAers and work out the rest later as they try to figure out the world team and where event specialists fit.

Remember that for the guys, they have to be competing as 15 year olds to be eligible for L10.

I believe Kevin and Eddie competed together at Winter Cup last February.

Holy crap I cannot believe Modi is an alternate for Worlds. Shocker!

I know, but I really did wonder for a second if he was some weird exception to the rule- he's just so tiny! Making the iron cross that much more incredible. And I think Eddie and Kevin were in different sessions at Winter Cup (I could be wrong).

Well, Jon Horton was probably making iron crosses when he was five, so . . . (seriously though, I agree with your point!)

You might be right about Winter Cup. I can't remember if Kevin made it to day 2.

I hate that there is almost no value in a solid AAer in MAG at the moment. Really stunned that Modi isn't on the team.

I have to believe Sam has shown he will have P bars back for Worlds, which decreases Modi's value. Just isn't worth trying to land that dismount on that leg in competition yet. That Sam would have easily won high bar without that extra mat shows how close he is to back.

Modi didn't help himself by finishing 4th AA. In a year with no team competition, just looking for potential medalists in the AA and events. Also doesn't help that he only has one really strong event, an event that Yul and maybe Sam are just as likely as he to final, better to bring guys that have potential to final on other events.

True. I would have thought him a shoo-in. But that 4th place finish really hurt him.

SO who does what?
AA Yul
Floor: Penev/Whittenburg
Pommel: Mikulak/Naddour
Rings: Whittenburg/Kimble
Vault: Penev/WHittenburg
PBars; Whittenburg/Mikulak (hopefully)
Hbar: Mikulak/Kimble

If not for pommel, Whittenburg would be a decent 2nd aa, but would make the EF kind of thin. I think it will be a decent team. Kimble has definitely come on a tha good time, and Penev has the power to keep up on floor/vault.

Someone mention Akash : Looking at this team, I am not sure who you would replace with Akash to keep this level. He really needed to be a lot more consistent to have a shot at aa.

Akash would have been in a slightly better position if Mikulak's comeback hadn't been so amazingly fast. Even then he might have been passed over for a strong PH guy.
The men's selection committee has a ridiculously hard job. It's not like WAG where strong events sort of go hand in hand (a strong vaulter is also usually competitive on floor for example), the guys specialities can sort of be all over the place. Like a PH/SR/PB guy plus a FX/PB/HB guy and it's impossible to get everyone to fit! Which just plain stinks for the AAers who don't have 2-3 crazy strong events or for the guys who just happen to have the wrong strong events.

Agree. Choice comes down to who has a better shot at a medal, Sam on pommel or Whittenberg AA? Kimble high bar or Whittenberg AA?

I agree. It comes down to consistency. IF Sam can put together 2 days, I think he has a better shot at PH than Whittenberg AA. but, that is a big IF for the men :(
