Floor Music

I get music from magic melodies. He is usually the cheapest. He is great to work with. He has a large collection of older songs for something different. His was the only cd that played at severval big gymnastics meets this year when the other girls music couldn't be read in the meets cd player. Something about a security block to prevent burning the cd.

As far as music is concerned go with what the gymnast likes she is more likely to perform when she likes the song. I prefer hip hop becuase my DD is a power gymnast and that lil fairy ballet music does nothing for her. She did so poorly with that level 5& 6 music. She use "Eye Of The Tiger" from the Rocky movie she even has punching moves in her floor routine. The judges and Fathers in the audience love it. Her highest floor score this year was 9.6!!! Now you know why she is so afraid to change her music.
We are looking for "We Run This" from the Stick movie or "I got The Power" by Snap. If any one in this room can help me find it we;d be forever in your debt!!!:D

oh, and sometimes we pass down routines. A girl whog got injured and can no longer compete might give me her tainted love routine. Because it's just what I'm looking for: fun and something I can dance to.

Purpleterah, are you after just the song, or an edited 1.30 version of the songs? I have "We Run This" in full version.

I'm the floor music GEEK at our gym...I LOVE music. I have so much classical music, and I love arranging my own pieces. I guess I specialise in classical music/emotive pieces. Soundtracks are so great; I especially hunt down instrumental ones. But you need to take inspiration from everywhere. RG, figure skating, synchronized swimming, broadway, television ads, documentaries...anywhere.

I've worked with Stella Umeh Lees on music and there are so many important aspects.
Number 1 is HAVE A BANNED LIST. Floor music is designed to be a vital part in helping your gymnast stand out (that's why MAG is so boring, right? *runs and hide. Respect!*). Don't let her use the some cutesy-tootsie music that every other gymnast has. Unfortunately, that means great music like the Pirates soundtrack is OUT. Unless she's got stellar choreo...the judges are tired of it.

Audacity is a free downloadable music editing software that you can create music with. If you've got the $$$ or the passion or you want to create you're entire gym centres music, then Goldwave is one of the best softwares out there. I think around $400 US dollars - it's definitely around $700 AUS.

Music that I'll recommend you find:
Amelie
Kill Bill Soundtrack
Luis Bacalov
Cirque du Soleil
Mr and Mrs Smith
Dire Straits
Ennio Morricone
Galliano
Marionelli
Michael Nyman
Moulin Rouge PSA 2
Schindler's List - and lots of John Williams stuff (stay away from the cheesy)

And the bizarre and more controversial pieces work well too. Olga Strazheva's Rite of Spring (Stravinsky); Verdi's La forza del destino Overture; Dvorak's Symphony No.2,

OH. One more important tip. Music can be completely wasted if your gymnast can't count in time, either due to no musical experience or no dance training. The less musically experienced/aware, the more simpler their music needs to be initially. Dance training is a MUST.

Music

A friend of ours is morphing 3 songs together from an older record from the 60's for my dd. Very different but totally cool. It will capture the attention of everyone! It's found @ Itunes, Herp Albert and the Tijuanna Brass, Whipped Cream. She careful choose 3 songs that will blend together beautiful and create the atmosphere and aura she is looking for in her routine. Her lines are beautiful on the floor and pointe that any ballet dancer would be envious of!

She went to IGC the first week in July, I did as well as a visiting coach, and had Abie Grossfeld and his personal coach Mehaigh work with her one-on-one during open gym after 6 hours of gymnastics during the day. Even the owner, Bruno Klaus would stop to watch and comment on her lines/toes, made me a very proud mama! But I think she's the cat's meow, even when she falls! All 3 agreed, she's exceptional and look forward to working with her again next year. Bruno told my dh when he came to pick us up, "she's good! Keep her going!" Made my dh beam with pride! It was a great week, and Abie was able to perfect her backhandstand/tuck and then turn it into a backlayout with a 3/4 twist before the week was out! Totally cool to watch each night as he transformed her tricks and polished them, they look perfect now and yet you're not sure why! OK, that was a totally random paragraph, ties in with the lines/toe thing which ties in with the music thing...yyssw!

Anyway, check Itunes as well for oldie music that will bring tears and reminiscing times for parents/grandparents and judges!

Hope that helps!

Until now Talitha didn't have music on her floor routine, just going to and fro twice or something. But coming season she has to do one on music. But at least the first 2 years, they will be compulsary. And yes I have heard it plenty already at the competitions of last season. The one she has to do now, isn't too bad. I don't like the next level though.

Eveningdew, that sounds great about your daughter. Great idea for the music and great to hear that you and she are thrilled about her beautiful form! Hearing high praise from respected people will only encourage her to keep on maintaining it.

And FF- LO fulls on beam: here we come!!!

I don't want to spam about this too much, but just so you all know: I'm officially going into business as a freelance composer -- offering, among other things, custom-composed routine music!

You can check out my website at www.geoffreytaucer.com for details and examples of my work.

The absolute best music I've ever had was Shania Twain's Man I Feel Like A Woman. The judge actually LAUGHED (Shock Gasp Horror) the whole way through the routine. (Not because it was bad though, my coach asked her later and she said it just was really funny). I hate Pirates of The Caribbean. Once it's original, sixty times it's just horrific. I know someone that uses the Macerena too. Her routines' hilarious, she does the dance at one point. :D

GT-

Congratulations on getting your website up- Good Luck with the business.

At dd's gym they have very standout-ish music. We have a person that mixes all of the songs, so there will never be a repeat of the same song at a meet. We do have one girl that came to our gym this summer with PoTC music and at this past week's Sectional, I think we heard the song about 3 different times. I do have to say that I lover her routine because as a PP has said, her choreography is fantastic - very eye catching. She has a sword fight in her routine and it is just a great choreography, much better than the other PoTC routines.

As I said though we were at a Sectional this past weekend and I am so Broadway and Big Banded out! That is all that we heard.

Our girls music stood out. We have a few latin/conga types. There is one girl I can only describe her music as 60's beatnik/jazz sound. My dd's music is called Evil and Good. It has this funky rhythm in the beginning and than a more sharp notes classical sound (because dd has good dancey skills and the classical let it show.)

Definitely go with something that makes people turn their heads.

I think for our girls the difference is we do not get to pick music or anything. I do get to write a big fat check though. Our girls are told their music and shown their routines. With the exception of cost, us parents don't complain because the coach is really good with matching personality/skill to the music and choreography and their scores certainly do reflect the great combination!
