my Dd has moderate scoliosis. 35 degree curve, she is 14 and still growing, she only got her period 2 months ago. Do you think gymnastics played a role in this? Doc said gymnastics is okay, but I can't see how it can help... she is a second year level 9 and in 8 th grade. Any advice? It will now be difficult to continue because she will be in a brace 16 hours or more per day. Has anyone been here before?

She wants too and she is doing great. However she went from 20 degrees to 35 degrees in a three month Period and during this time she can't stay on the beam while tumbling etc... The doc says she has three years of growth yet. I am glad gymnastics is not making it worse, but beam seems to be an issue. We see specialists in a couple weeks to see how quickly this is progressing. But core strength is huge and gymnasrics is helping tremendously.now there are just so many more worries!!! I hope it all works out I am just so nervous that it will get even worse as she continues to grow

My dd has scoliosis. A 24 degree curve (now) that required a brace at night for 15 months. When she was diagnosed and had a rapid degree change we immediately stopped all walk-overs of any kind. And all bridging. I think it helped stopped the rapid change. My younger dd, when she was diagnosed, we stopped walk-overs and bridges as well, as a preventative. Hers has never gotten that bad, I think only a 15 now. Our doctor agrees that gymnastics is good for them. However equated the walk-overs and bridging to hammering a bent nail. It will bend more with repeated hammering. That is why we stopped them. I feel that it worked.

I am surprised that your dr thinks she has 3 more years left of growth when she has already started her period. Usually girls only have about a year left. But everyone is different. My dd is supposedly done growing (according to her x-rays) however she has yet to start her period.

I don't think she does walkovers at all anymore. I know layouts on beam were real tough for her so she does BHS-back tuck , but lately she went from rarely falling to always falling... she is getting the Boston brace which she will wear from 16 hours a day. We are also having a surgical consult. My son is 16 and is still growing and so is she , I am 5'21/2 and my husband is 6 '2 and she is 5'1.... so the doc thinks she has a few more inches plus the X-rays show her growth plates are still open.I am very nervous about all this for her. I am just hoping she can keep doing what she loves....

While 35 degrees would not be considered "mild," I don't think you can automatically assume it's the end of her career. My DD had mild scoliosis (less than 20 degrees), and the doctor said gymnastics can only HELP the situation. Our doctor also said she would be done growing by two years after getting her period. I'm pretty sure she was done quite a bit sooner. And x-rays also showed growth plates open up until the end of her treatment. Hang in there....

She was 20 degrees 6 months ago... the doc said gymnastics is good... but it seems to be deteriorating fast.... I have hope though and so does she.

My girls both have very mild scoliosis and the doctor said gym would help because of the core strength. As for the growing... for me personally, I grew almost 2 inches after I went to college. I started my period in 8th grade, so I continued growing for about 5 years after starting!

Please keep track of your girls... my daughter is now at a 40 degree curve and we are discussing surgical options, now we are told she can continue with gymnastics but her balance will be off and lots of things will be hard if her curve stays the way it is...( her hips and shoulders are off and she has a rib hump) then we are told she can go back after fusion. But she won't be able to touch her toes but she can do somethings? It's like the doc has no clue, she is a second year level nine gymnast... this is a disaster- she went from 20-40 degrees in 11 months. She has three years of growth left too.. I am at a loss

I am so sorry....my heart goes out to you....and to her....just so hard. I hope she is ok, and things work out for her.

Mine is in the back brace at night to like another poster. How is your DD doing? Is she suffering a lot of pain? How was her season?

My daughter was diagnosed with scoliosis four years ago when she was 11. She has an s-curve. Top curve was around 23 degrees and bottom curve was 14 degrees. She still had lots of growing to do. Before deciding on using a brace, we decided to try physical therapy first. She went to a scoliosis specialist with Scoliosis Rehab: http://www.scoliosisrehab.com/default.aspx.

She learned exercises called "activations" to help strengthen the muscles around the curves. She did these exercises every day and did not end up using a brace. Her curves remained steady and only got worse when she had growth spurts. She is 15 years old now and a third year Level 10. She got her period last year after turning 14 and her curves have stayed about the same.

Gymnastics helps and my daughter still does activations as often as she can. When she doesn't do activations it definitely impacts her gymnastics. When she makes the time to do her scoliosis exercises, her gymnastics improves and her back feels better.

Good luck and hang in there!!

She won her first level 9 meet in the beginning of December. Then placed on every event the next two meets and did well... After Christmas her vault was going crooked and she called it dangerous and kept falling off the beam.. By the end of January I thought it wAs all mental... She ended up only doing floor at states and now we go to the top hospital in the country for scoliosis this week. Her floor routine was beautiful.. Although she just missed a 9 and is not going to regionals... Her gymnastics took a dive and her spine got more twisted it is a very sad turn. Praying she can get this new procedure so after several
Months of spine surgery she can continue if she wants.its a sad chapter I can upload the X-ray if anyone wants to see it... It makes me cry

That is devastating! My dd's went bad quickly too, but not quite that bad. Hers went from 14 - 26 in a few months. That is when we started bracing which stopped the curve. I am so sorry you and your family are going through this! I hope you can figure out first a way to stop the curve and get it straightened out some and second that she can get back to gymnastics. Let us know how it goes and I will pray for a solution other than surgery.
