The qualification to regionals is based on scores at the state meet. I believe most regions require a 34AA score at states to compete at regionals. If a gymnast is unable to compete at their state meet due to injury, she can still be petitioned to regionals as long as she meets the petition requirements (i.e., a note from a certified medical professional explaining injury as well as getting a score of 35AA or 36AA, depending on region at any sanctioned meet. There are also other ways to petition.). To qualify to nationals, you'll need to be in the top 7 of your age group and have a score no less than 35AA.
Just to clarify. Level 9s need top 7 and 34 to go to eastern/westerns and level 10s need top 7 and a 35 to go to nationals.
In NJ, I believe the qualifying score for INDIVDUAL EVENTS is 9.2 (but I could be wrong, it might be 9.1), to go to Regionals. This is for event specialists (doesn't apply if you compete AA, don't make 34, then try to go for one event). To advance to Nationals with individual event, you have to win your event at Regionals.

The exact wording: "If any region is unable to field a team of seven gymnasts per age division, the open slots will be filled based on a percentage of eligible athletes in each region, in each age division."
not sure the mechanism of implementation.... maybe if Jr. A in Region 2 only has 5 girls, leaving 2 open spots, the open spot would presumably go to the region with the largest # of Jr. A who scored over 35?
Just saw on the Region 7 website this is no longer the case, IES cannot advance to JO's.
Yeah, we have a level 9 IES this year and my dd said that she can't qualify to westerns. She just gets to compete at regionals.
Which totally stinks in my opinion. I mean how many girls could there be? that win an event but are not part of the top 7? Just a couple dozen?. they deserve the opportunity to compete against the nation's best!
Event winners at regionals used to advance to the NIT, which no longer exists. The NIT no longer exists in order to give more qualifying spots at JO Nationals (they have increased the number of age groups). I'm assuming at some point it comes down to money and logistics.
Oh, I get "why" it was done. And I was an advocate of increasing the total number going to Nationals, instead of split Nationals and NIT. Just stinks for the event specialists who could potentially win at nationals.
