When I was coaching in the Raleigh area, it kind of felt like everybody hated everybody.
I haven't gotten that vibe nearly as much in Baltimore, and I didn't get it at all in San Jose.
(I should also mention that there were something like twelve gyms in the Raleigh area close enough to be trying to snag the same athletes, whereas neither San Jose nor Baltimore is nearly so densely-packed)
I’m surprised San Jose doesn’t have a bunch of intense gyms, given all the tech money commuters in town.
Hmm. I'm in the Raleigh area and I agree that our gym has a, shall we say, rivalry, with one gym in the area. At least our coaches do. lol. But I could care less and know people and have friends at several other gyms. I haven't heard of a ton of poaching, but I could be oblivious. Anyway, no hate from me towards any other gym or gymnast in our area.
I feel that around here gyms are fairly friendly. The community is small and coaches may coach across a number of gyms across their careers, sometimes ending up back at a gym they left a few years ago. Coaches from different gyms socialise with each other outside of work, and very occasionally a coach will even work at multiple gyms. And gymnasts too - I know that any of my daughter‘s previous gyms would happily have her back.
I also have a private theory though that every gym has its nemesis gym. The gym that it just feels a little bit sweeter to beat, or more bitter to be beaten by than all the other gyms of a similar standard. Although it’s mostly unspoken and we all still play nice on the surface. And it isn’t necessarily mutual. Like I would say that gym X was our nemesis, but gym X would probably name gym Y.
