As USAG tries to find its footing, and starts publicly declaring the direction it is trying to head, here are 5 key concepts that I strongly believe are essential for the gymnastics community, and USAG specifically, to recognize and successfully address for gymnastics to move significantly forward in a positive direction.

Conflict of Interest.
Intoxicating, enticing, self-interests lure adults away from the health, safety, and well-being of athletes. Recognize it for what it is.

Ultimate Veto Power
This belongs to the athlete. An athlete, including a child athlete, has ultimate veto power over physical, mental, and emotional aspects of themselves regarding sports. No means no.

Life Journey.
The athlete owns their life journey. Short term gain can cause long-term loss.
Long-term loss of a child athlete’s health, safety and well-being is unacceptable.

Sequestering.
Children are to never be sequestered away from their parents. This is where maladaptive treatment of children festers unchecked.

Expert.
The athlete is the expert on their own body. They, and no one else, knows what their body feels like. They know when their body is telling them to either stop or it will get hurt. Pushing an athlete beyond this is not in the athlete’s best interest. See point # 1 above.
