Regardless of spelling, we don't seem to have many here! I'm sure there must be an orthopedic specialist near by, I just find it funny how uncommon they are here in Canada whereas for you American CB members, it seems to be where the majority of you turn for injuries. Here, most serious sports injuries end up getting a sports medicine referral (as opposed to orthopedist).
I’m in America and our family doctor is where we go first for everything except emergencies. Our insurance doesn’t give us any free reign over that. The family doctor decides if we need tests or specialists, such as physical therapy or a sports medicine doctor.

We tried going to PT first once and will never do that again. PT was reluctant to identify the specific issue but wanted her to start a time-consuming course of PT without any activity restrictions, which was the exact opposite of what ortho ended up recommending (boot + stretching at home, no PT).

In Canada you cannot see a specialist, like orthopedics, without a referral. I have never heard of a ortho walk in clinic here, though it would be great.

We have 2 orthopedic practices in our area that take walk-ins/urgent care.

So we go to there first as they have Xray on site. Our copay is more but no referral required on current plan.
