Worlds Team Announcement

I am very confused because I was under the impression that the 2013 Worlds team had not yet been announced by USAG. However, today FIG posted this on their Facebook page, which is a list of all the athletes competing and which events:

http://fig2.lx2.sportcentric.com/sy...RT_WCh2013_Antwerp_nom_reg_WAG.pdf?1378299874

It says that Mckayla Maroney will be competing vault and floor, Kyla Ross and Simone Biles will do all around, and Brenna Dowell bars and beam (which is in fact the team I predicted).

I was wondering if maybe I had just missed the announcement, but then I looked on USA Gymnastics' website and they said the team would not be announced until September 15. So have they already made the decision and just not announced it? Or do they just have to register ahead of time and they still haven't made a final decision? Can anyone enlighten me on this?

This always happens. Teams have to be entered so USAG enter some place holders, of course these can change right up to the day of the competition. Often a gymnast will be injured before, during or after the worlds selection camp.

Those names are only slightly meaningful. We will know the actual team during the week before the comp. The gymnasts usually fly directly from the ranch to worlds.

What I found very interesting was the men's list. Jake Dalton has a much bigger chance of medalling in the all around than Alex Naddour does on rings. Although Alex deserves to be in more than one event due to his finish at Nationals, I think Jake deserves to do the all around. The men's coordinator said that decisions would be based on chances to medal.

Hard to know what's up or what will happen, but Naddour did finish second on rings at Nationals. I know he doesn't have the package of very difficult strength moves that Wynn and the other top international guys have, but his swings were breathtaking. I am very glad I'm not the one who has to decide between rings for him and AA for Dalton or who has to pick the third vaulter.

FYI - Mustafina, Nabiyeva, Paseka, Rodionova for Russia.

Are Grishina and Afanasyeva injured? Bummer, Afanasyeva's floor has been so spectacular this year.

Afanasyeva - injury + behavior
Grishina - surgery
Komova - illness

the wonders of Google search ;-)

I think this is a great team!! I like Simone for AA gold and McKayla for vault gold. Kyla can easily medal also.

Apparently Brenna has now been named as an alternate and will not be competing, instead Maroney will try for AA

Don't you still need a 4th person? Would that be Price?

No I do not think this is a team competition. This is individual. The USA will enter 3 AA gymnasts and Brenna will not compete. The other way of doing this would be to have two AA's and two event specialists to try to medal as much as possible.

There is no team competiton at worlds in the year after an olympic year. So only AA and individual events. No country can enter more than 3 gymnasts for each event. So since McKayla will now be competing bars and beam as well as floor and vault, Brenna is now the (traveling) alternate.

Ultimately though, only 2 gymnasts from each country can compete AA. So one of the three (Simone, Kyla or McKayla) will not make it to AA finals.
