Anon Xcel to JO as a teen?

I am currently an Xcel Diamond and was wondering if anyone would consider it possible to make the move to Level 8. I want a chance to compete in college (probably D3), and as far as I know, no one recruits out of Xcel. Any knowledge?

I hopped over to level 8 from Xcel platinum as a teenager. I was old enough that I was able to petition to L7 and then do one meet as a L7 to qualify up to 8, so it’s definitely an option! I’ve heard of some Xcel diamonds getting recruited to D3 schools, but I do think that it’s more common for them to recruit from JO/DP.

Not only is it easy to switch between the programs, but doing so is actively encouraged in the event that one program is a better fit than the other. Many gymnasts have made the transition from Junior Olympic to Xcel, and we have also seen gymnasts move in the opposite direction

The ease of switching from Xcel to DP is gym dependent.
USAG has designated the transfer from DP levels to Xcel based on the highest DP level a gymnast has competed as an all around athlete.
They do not have a similar transfer chart for Xcel to DP.

Some gyms will NOT let a gymnast transition to DP no matter what.

Other gyms (ones that use lower level Xcel to bypass compulsories) actually encourage the transition.

And still other gyms decide on a case-by-case basis.

With the new Sapphire division in Xcel (pilot program in Regions 3, 6, 7, and 8 ... Alabama, Arkansas, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Kansas, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Maine, Maryland, Mississippi, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, and Wyoming), there may be a slightly better chance of being able to get recruited to compete at the college level. There could also be an opportunity to be a walk-on in a D-3 school.

My daughter transitioned from Xcel Diamond to Level 9 at age 14, went back to Xcel Diamond for a season at age 15, and is going back to Level 9/10 this year at 16 as an event specialist. Her gym has been supportive, but not all would be. This has worked well for her and us as parents. If your gym is supportive, it's worth exploring.

Have you asked your gym? When it comes to Xcel, there seems to be a ton of different answers all dependent on the philosophy of your gym. At our gym it's pretty common after Silver or Gold. We don't see many Platinum or Diamond girls move over to DP, but I don't know if it's because they don't want to, don't want the hours, or aren't deemed appropriate for DP. In my opinion, less and less gyms are adhering to the "old school" way of thinking about Xcel so if you have the skills, I say go for it! Good luck.
