    I don't like fat gymnasts

My DD is very strong--I guess she would be called a power gymnast. She has very little fat, but is solid. That is the way she is built. Solid and strong. She is having some medical issues and we are looking at a medication in which a side effect is weight gain. So, should she stop doing...

    Parents Team Hairstyles

My daughter also has very thick hair that is hard to get into ringlets. Some of the team moms wanted the girls to match, so I tried it for a few meets. Finally, I looked at my dd and told her I didn't think it was worth it. She agreed, so the next meet we just pulled it back. She looked very...

How to help a gymnast shake the nerves away?

Has anyone done the workbooks through Doc Ali? I was specifically wondering about the one for ages 9 and up. Would it be adaptable/appropriate for a just turning 8 year old? How did you use the workbook--with your child or on their own?

    Attitude

You are doing great with her--you set clear limits, have consequences, and follow through consistently. What more can you do as a parent? Keep at it! I would just suggest keeping the lines of communication open with the coaches. They do have to work out their own relationship, after all...

    Off Topic Cell phone rules

I think it really depends on individual circumstances regarding cell phones. We don't have a home phone anymore, so as soon as DD starts to stay at home alone, she will be getting a cell phone (probably at the end of fifth grade, going into sixth grade). Also, she will likely ride the bus...

Parents Help Needed - Reality Check on Switching Gyms

When my DD changed levels last January, the 8:00 pm time about did her in, so I completely understand. I worked it out with the HC that we would leave at 7:30. That was fine, and we did that for about four months. When summer came and she was able to sleep longer in the morning, we stayed the...

Why do many parents keep track of every girl's scores at meets?

So, I am rather new to all of this as my daughter just started competing level 4. I downloaded meet tracker to follow my DDs scores. I do the same with her swimming times. At the first meet, most of the moms from our group were keeping track of all the scores for the team. So, I did, too...

Why don't they TELL me their kids have special needs?

I would likely leave that blank on an enrollment form. I imagine the enrollment form gets filled out before taking classes. If so, I don't know what kind of information I feel comfortable sharing. When we first started at our current gym, I had no idea how long it would last. I am not going to...

Parents Parent Association (Booster Club) Question

Like I said, I think our gyms must be very different. We have about 50 kids on team. So, that would be over 500 hours of volunteer time. What are they doing? Helping out at meets? Selling things? We only host one meet a year. Maybe your team hosts a lot more? At our gym, parents are billed...

Parents Parent Association (Booster Club) Question

I think this is rather excessive, and would absolutely protest agreeing to this. What kind of volunteer expectations do you have? I am guessing our gyms are very different. I can't even imagine this... For my daughter's swim team, we had something similar which was a $200 check or...

To leave or not to leave?

I would ask her psychologist for a recommendation for a psychiatrist. They often work together. In my experience, psychiatrists are mostly there to prescribe and monitor meds, so you would still work with the psychologist for learning techniques to work with your DD. Does that make sense?

To leave or not to leave?

I think I have posted this before, but IMHO it is worth repeating. I have a similar aged daughter also dealing with anxiety. What has helped me as a parent more than anything is livesinthebalance.org by Dr. Ross Greene. He gives great tools for structuring conversations with your child. And, in...

    Parents L4 invitation~mixed feelings

I have learned over the time I have been reading these boards that each gym has their own way for moving kids. My daughter moved into L4 training in January. She didn't have most of the big skills, but neither did most of the kids moving into L4. That is just how they do it at her gym. That...

    Plantar Fasciitis/Heel pain

I have dealt with plantar fascitis for a long time as an adult. Stretching is key! The best shoes for my pain are fit flops. I wear them all the time in the house (have one pair for the house only) and then from about April to October I always wear them, I just buy the ones with sparkles for...

    Questions for Coaches???

My questions or conversations are almost all about behavior. For example, I recently let them know she was afraid of a certain skill. My DD is not one to express her fear, so by letting them know viam email, they are better able to help her. Otherwise, I think you can ask open ended questions...
