Our practice hours are as follows:
Level 3 - 9 hours/week
Level 4 - 12 hours/week
Level 5 - 16 hours/week
No Level 6's
Level 7 - 16 hours/week
Level 8 through Level 10 - 22.5 hours/week
I would not be okay with my son doing 22.5 hours/week at Level 4.
My son sees benefits and drawbacks for starting on every event. With 6 events, he really cares more about what event he ends on. He prefers not to end on Pommel Horse or Rings.
My son's Level 8 routine last year started with a straight body kip and then he went straight into a moy. Looking at the code of points, a kip and a L-hold are two separate A skills, so I'd think they should count as two elements??
Our gym follows the "get your kip, get your grips" motto. Our coaches would not let our boys start working giants on a regular bar without them being comfortable in grips.
Our youngest boys start in Club Bronze. After Bronze, they either progress to Silver or move over to Level 3 (depending on their skill level). Older boys that were not identified at a young age for Bronze, can go right to Level 3 after a skills evaluation.
Then our ideal progression is this...
I think there are a lot of positives with this, but I do have concerns. We are in current Region 2 for context.
1. What is the point of combining Region 2 & 4 if they end up having separate "sectionals" instead of regionals. Isn't that pretty much like keeping separate regions?
2. If...
My son started at 9. He's now 12 (but competes as a 13 year old) and just TODAY his coach told him he's officially training Level 9 for next season. Starting at 9 is not too late for the right kids. They do need to really want it and be intrinsically motivated when it comes to conditioning, etc.
Son is a gymnast.
We did mommy & me classes when he was little.
He was in the "gymnastics club" in Year 1 & Year 2 at his school (equivalent to Kindergarten & Frist Grade - we were living in the UK - they only did floor basics like forward rolls, cartwheels, etc.).
Age 9 - he asked to start...
Our PNW gym has been growing our boys team program, but we are going to have to stall due to coaches. This past season, we had 43 boys & 4 coaches. With another local gym closing, new Level 3 boys coming up, and post-season shuffling, we'll be around 50 boys for the summer, I'm guessing. But we...
This whole discussion is fascinating. I'm shocked at how different the qualification process is for boys vs. girls. I'm just learning about it for boys now as this year is the first year my son is eligible for anything further than regionals. I feel the boy's system is really fair - it's a...
