Off Topic Introductions Thread (2025 Version)

I am a mom of two gymnasts. I didn't know anything about gymnastics before joining this site, but have learned so much. My oldest just finished her first season as a level 2 and is excited to move to level 3 next season. My youngest is on preteam and still deciding whether gymnastics is her...

Parents Slow progress at lower levels

They are not all specifically doing privates for back handspring. They actually seem to discourage asking the coach for privates, but coaches will recommend them for some girls. They do expect near perfection to compete a level and the girls are very successful at meets at every level. I don't...

Parents Slow progress at lower levels

Thanks. I am sure this is what is going on. She has been working shapes a long time. If I had to guess, I think her coach is worried about her take off. She is not a particularly high or powerful jumper and she thinks about everything she does, which makes her slow. I do think she could use...

Thanks for the advice. The level 2 group is full, so not an option to go back to that group.

Parents Slow progress at lower levels

My daughter told me that she doesn't think she is good at gymnastics. She is only 7, level 2. This will be her first year competing, but she has been in a succession of pre-team type classes for more than 2 years. She is training with a group of girls that are training level 3 and she is the...

    Parents Tumbling to gymnastics

It really depends on the kid. My oldest daughter is naturally strong. She learned a pullover by herself on her home bar 3 days after we got it ( at 5yo). She took at least another year to learn a back walkover due to poorer shoulder flexibility. My younger daughter has been working on her...

    Parents Meet fees

My daughter is also level 2. We have 6 meets about 1200 in fees. We pay almost 400/month for 8 hours/week.

    Off Topic Gymnastics with glasses

If you really don't want glasses, keep trying with the contacts. It feels really weird at first, but you get used to putting them in. It took me a couple weeks of trying when I first got contacts as a kid.

    Parents Struggling with vault

Thank you all for reining in my crazy. I had already inquired about privates after making this post and the coach does recommend a few to wok on flexibility with floor skills, but didn't mention vault. They let me know the rest of the class ( including her) should be moving to various other...

    Parents Struggling with vault

Does anyone have advice or experience with a child who did not have a powerful jump/spring/punch and learned it later? Did it just click at some point? My daughter is 6 and has been on preteam for about 6 months and does not seem to be improving at near the rate she was prior to preteam on any...

Parents Higest Xcel level an average/neighborhood girl can achieve

Thank you for posting this question. It is something I have been thinking about as well with my daughter who is almost 6 and on preteam. My daughter also has trouble with flexibility. She can do a bridge, but can't get in the same position as the other girls with legs straight. She has one side...

    Parents New gym mom

I am a pretty new gym mom too, but here's my opinion. I think you should do what works for you as a parent. If you have plenty of free time and money, then let her do 2 days. If not, thats ok too. Only going one day a week at this age is not going to hold her back. If she is super talented, she...

    Parents Choosing between gyms

Update: she made preteam at gym B which ups her to two days a week, so we are dropping gym A. She is excited about moving up. Any good ideas for something nice we can do for her coaches at the gym we are leaving to say thank you?

    Parents Choosing between gyms

Yeah supposedly they only add new team members in May. It looks like they do meets in january to april? They did mention she may be able to join a rec competition team this season while waiting if we wanted, but I don't know if that would be any benefit to her.

    Parents Choosing between gyms

Thanks! She likes both, but likes the coach better at gym A. I can't really go off that though since she will not have either coach once she makes team. In general the coaches at gym A are younger and more upbeat than the ones at gym B. I am fully aware of the time/ cost of competative...
