My dd is 9 and dealing with this as well. She is a lefty but learned most of her floor skills and some acro in dance where they worked both sides but the right side was used much more frequently in dances. It's taking her a long time to settle on a dominant leg and even the coaches keep wavering...
There is a cheer gym close to her studio and she has friends there. They do amazing stunts!! But your post made me smile just imagining my dd in cheer :) Her favorite dance style is what I call angsty contemporary. She is a dramatic actress. Peppy is not her forte. :D
:) I actually prefer dance. I used to dance. My YDD dances and isn't interested in gymnastics. Gymnastics is a complete unknown. I just feel like I am stuck between a rock and a hard place with what she wants from it. She doesn't want rec, she doesn't want excel, she doesn't want team... but she...
She dances 7-8 hours a week. She is at a performance studio that does not compete, so competition season is not a factor. They do 6-7 performances spread over the year. Unlike gym, hours can be dialed up and down somewhat. 5 hours are required. Level 4 gym is 12 hours a week. What she enjoys...
She is only been on pre-team since January so 3 months, while she's been dancing since the age of 4. I was hoping she'd have more time to really get the taste of it and make her choice.
DD9 is on pre-team. She kinda fell into the whole thing when we went to try out to a new gym because the old one's schedule didn't work for us anymore. She had been happy with a once a week rec class before that. She dances fairly seriously. She is well conditioned, very strong and flexible. Her...
:) I was just about to write that I am the opposite. I click with the dance moms but not with the gym moms. At the studio there is a small cozy waiting area and because there are only two rooms and each class is only 8 kids in each there is a close group of parents that's pretty constant. There...
They do sacrifice a lot. My dds are not there yet, but I was (not gymnastics). I averaged 5-6 hours of sleep and had almost no free time weekdays or weekends. If there was a party or evert I REALLY wanted to go to, I planned ahead: asked for homework in advance, woke up even earlier, etc.
My dd got invited to JO preteam at 8 after only taking rec classes before. Having said that, the reason the coaches accepted her and looks like are paying her attention and hoping for progress is because they say while she needs to play catch up on skills, her form on the ones she has and gets...
